Jefferson Starship Lands on the Pier

What better way to celebrate Throwback Thursday than to jam out to Jefferson Starship? The sci-fi folk rock ensemble, founded by Jefferson Airplane’s Paul Kantner in 1971, will rock the Pier this Thursday.

They will be joined by Purple Mountains Majesty, whose music you can get a taste of here.

Council Brainstorming How to Fund Affordable Housing

At its upcoming meeting, the City Council will discuss possible ways of funding affordable housing in the future. The city is facing a major affordable housing funding crunch after the loss of money from its redevelopment agency in 2012 when the state shut down redevelopment agencies throughout California. Before then, the city would give about $15 million a year to nonprofit housing developers to help build new or preserve existing subsidized housing. With the regional housing crisis ongoing, the need for housing, both affordable and market-rate, is dire.

When: Tuesday, August 25 at 7 p.m.
Where: Santa Monica City Hall, 1685 Main St.

Santa Monica Public Library Goes to the Beach

The Santa Monica Public Library will continue its summer beach sessions this Friday at the Annenberg Community Beach House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Santa Monica Public Library at the Beach will feature a curated collection of books for readers of all ages, a Surfside Lounge to relax and grab some shade, and beach-themed activities for the whole family. Programs will include: Seaside Story Time for Kids, Hula Dancing and Hula Hooping classes, nautical crafts, and our new South Beach Reads Book Group for adults. Librarians will be on hand to sign out books, answer questions and demonstrate cutting edge library apps, eBooks and streaming media. In addition, anyone signing up for a library card will receive a free Santa Monica Public Library beach tote,” according to library officials.

The duo, known as Brasil Brazil, will deliver “the fervor, enthusiasm and excitement of popular Brazilian music with a variety of styles, rhythms and faces of this colorful and tropical culture,” according to the city’s website.

Once again, Jazz on the Lawn will also feature a lineup of food trucks. This week, Tokyo Doggy Style, Hungry Nomad, and The Pudding Truck will be offering up their cuisine.
