JOTL Banner 300x205This week, take a walk around Santa Monica Airport with LA Walks to learn about current issues facing the airport, hang out at Stewart Park while enjoying free live music, head to the Promenade for a picnic, and check out the next installment of the Twilight Concert Series on the Pier.

LA Walks the Santa Monica Airport

This Saturday, August 6, LA Walks, a pedestrian advocacy group that makes walking safe, accessible and fun for all Angelenos, will sponsor a special 3.5 mile walk around the perimeter of Santa Monica Airport to highlight the issues facing the city-owned airfield.

Participants will be joined by Loyola Marymount University and Board Member of the Santa Monica Airport2Park Foundation Michael Brodsky as they get a peek at “a part of Santa Monica that most people rarely see and even fewer pedestrians actually get to walk.”

“We will walk the perimeter of Santa Monica Airport (SMO) to see and learn about the current issues and community impacts relating to this facility and to hear about potential creative new proposals to transform and repurpose this property into a future grand park that will be open and accessible to all,” according to an Airport2Park press release issued Sunday.

The tour will start at 10 a.m. at the southwest corner of Clover Park (2600 Ocean Park Blvd, Santa Monica, 90405) at the fence next to Santa Monica Airport runway.

For more information, visit the event page on Facebook.

Jazz on the Lawn Returns to Stewart Park

This Sunday, August 7, Jazz on the Lawn returns to Stewart Park (1836 Stewart Street) with a performance by La Sirena y Orquesta Mar de Ashé, “a family friendly, upbeat salsa/Latin dance band with a big brass sound and distinctive vocals and vocal harmonies,” according to the city’s website.

Jazz on the Lawn will happen every Sunday in August with each performance joined by a different line up of food trucks.

Picnic on the Promenade

Downtown Santa Monica, Inc., the nonprofit that runs the city’s thriving downtown, is bringing back the summer lunchtime festivities with Picnic on the Promenade starting this week through August 26.

On Friday, August 5 from 12 to 3 p.m., leave the cubicle and head to the Promenade, between Arizona Ave. and Santa Monica Blvd., for some fun activities on your lunch hour.

“This annual summer series eases locals and Promenade walkers into the weekend every Friday afternoon with music, classic board games, Ping-Pong, interactive challenges, and free services from Downtown merchants. Bring a lunch or grab-and-go from one of Downtown’s award-winning eateries and soak in the sun,” the according to Downtown Santa Monica Inc.

NATALIA LAFOURCADE Performs at the Santa Monica Pier

This Thursday, the Twilight Concerts Series at the Santa Monica Pier continues with performances by Natalia Lafourcade and Monsieur Periné.

You can sample Natalia Lafourcade’s music here.

And Monsieur Periné’s music here.

With the Expo light rail line having opened just a few months ago and Santa Monica’s public bike-share program in full swing, officials are reminding people that they have real alternatives to driving to the concerts, which can be frustrating and expensive.

“Warning: Parking by the beach is expensive! Avoid high fees, long lines and maintain your chill by riding EXPO, BIG BLUE BUS, BREEZE BIKE SHARE, skateboard, rideshare, ebike, human feet, hover-thingy, llama with a saddle. Oh and there’s a sweet bike valet too,” the Pier website reads.

Your evening will be much more pleasant if you don’t have to worry about parking or waiting in line to get out of the parking lot after the concert.
