Last week, months after appointing herself to serve on the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath succeeds the Honorable Wendy Greuel as the next Chair of LAHSA. Furthering her mission to create a homeless response and service system that is transparent and accountable to Angelenos, and that moves with urgency to address the humanitarian crisis, Supervisor Horvath’s role as Chair of LAHSA is precedent-setting, becoming the first elected official to assume the role of chair.
Supervisor Horvath becomes chair following her unanimously supported motion before the Board of Supervisors to declare homelessness an emergency in Los Angeles County, expediting and expanding homelessness response efforts focused on: encampment resolution, housing, and mental health and substance use disorder services. Four weeks later, the Board adopted the largest budget in County history to address the crisis in our communities.
“As author of LA County’s homelessness emergency declaration and in partnership with Mayor Bass and our regional leaders, I am honored to take up the gavel as the next Chair of LAHSA. We must use our seats of power to do absolutely everything we can to center the experiences of unhoused people in our work and to drive effective and efficient service delivery across the region,” said LAHSA Chair Lindsey P. Horvath. “We have serious work ahead of us to strengthen the impact and accountability of LAHSA as we continue the critical work of housing those who are living on our streets while also acting urgently to prevent more Angelenos from falling into homelessness.”
Through her leadership role on the LAHSA Commission, Chair Horvath seeks to strengthen LAHSA’s governance structure by bringing City and County leaders together at one table to expedite homelessness solutions. Following the recent release of the 2023 Homeless Count, Chair Horvath will make more frequent and reliable data sharing a priority during her one-year term as Chair.
Chair Horvath looks forward to advancing regional solutions to homelessness alongside her Board of Supervisor colleagues; Mayor Karen Bass; LAHSA Commissioners and new CEO Dr. Va Lecia Adams Kellum; and local cities while maximizing federal and state support as Los Angeles leads its emergency homelessness response with the care and services necessary to get people off the streets and safely indoors.
