Historic Restoration Complete at Santa Monica Airport

Date:

Every week, Next republishes a piece from City Manager Oliver Chi’s weekly newsletter.

Our Airport team and Architectural Services Division have recently completed a terrific renovation of 3200 Airport Avenue, which served as the original 1940s administration building for Santa Monica Airport!

Moving ahead, the newly updated facility will soon be home to Matilda’s Bakery, Laughing Heart Restaurant, and NEON Rated. The 16,966-square-foot wood-frame building showcases exterior details that feature historic architectural character that are uniquely regional. However, the building was showing its age, as a comprehensive Property Condition Assessment identified problems with the building envelope, interior finishes, and core building systems.

Given the age of the building, coupled with the increasing maintenance needs, the Airport team identified that a comprehensive renovation would reduce operating costs and maximize long- term use of the property. Today, the finished project brings the building into full code compliance and achieved LEED Gold certification, all while preserving the buildings historic exterior.

Kudos to the team for their work on this project! And be on the lookout for ribbon-cutting ceremonies soon, where we’ll christen the building for Matilda’s Bakery and Laughing Heart Restaurant!
