This week, Santa Monica’s City Council will officially declare May “Bike Month,” you can get a preview of the new expansion of Airport Park, and you can wind down the week with a special Handlebar Happy Hour at the Craftsman in Downtown Santa Monica.

Learn about Plans for Airport Park’s 12-Acre Expansion

The city of Santa Monica recently tapped designer of Los Angeles’ Grand Park, Mark Rios of Rios Clementi Hale, to spearhead plans for a 12-acre expansion of Santa Monica’s Airport Park and on Friday, May 13, you’ll have a chance to give input on what that should look like.

“The evening will be an opportunity for the community to hear from acclaimed designer Mark Rios about the parameters of the project for expanding Airport Park on land the City has reclaimed from aviation use, and Mr. Rios’ preliminary ideas for the possibilities there, as well as give feedback to Mr. Rios on what residents would like to see in the expanded park,” according to Neil Carrey, president of Airport2Park Foundation, an organization advocating for the redevelopment of Santa Monica Airport into a park.

The event starts at 7 p.m. at Mount Olive Church (1343 Ocean Park Boulevard) and is open to the public. Food and drink will be available. RSVP to info@airport2park.org by May 12.

May is Officially Bike Month

The Santa Monica City Council tonight will officially declare May to be Bike Month at the top of its meeting.

“As a Silver Level Bike Friendly Community, this is positive reminder of the important contribution that biking holds for mobility, sustainability and the health and well being of our city, its residents and visitors. We would love for you to join us for the presentation 6:30pm Tuesday at City Hall,” Santa Monica Spoke wrote on its website.

Over the last four years, Santa Monica has seen a major increase in the number of people riding their bikes in the city. The launch of the Bike Action Plan in 2011 has resulted in a number of biking improvements throughout the city, not least the recent launching of Los Angeles County’s first public bike-share system.

Handlebar Happy Hour

Speaking of Bike Month, make sure you stop by the Craftsman in Downtown Santa Monica on your way back from work this Thursday to drink with fellow bike commuters, enthusiasts, and riders.

Breeze Bike Share will be there celebrating six months of operations and there will be special prize giveaways. Happy hour runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. For more information, visit smspoke.org.
