It may be fall, but that doesn’t mean we have to spend our time indoors. We’ve got plenty coming up to keep us active and outside to enjoy autumn in Santa Monica.

Bogotá Change at Bergamot Station

On Wednesday, October 1, the Santa Monica Museum of Art will host a free screening Bogotá Changea film about the evolution taking place in the South American capital.

“The film chronicles the terms of Mayors Antanas Mockus and Enrique Peñalosa, who proactively transformed Bogotá, Colombia in less than 10 years. From mimes in place of traffic police to a burst of bicycle paths and green spaces, these unorthodox officials championed the use of creative solutions for complex social problems,” according to SMMoA’s website.

Though billed as a “bike-in” screening, Museum officials said that biking to the event is not required. Happy hour is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the film runs from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

From the Museum’s website: “This screening is presented in conjunction with Citizen Culture: Artists and Architects Shape Policy, on view in the Museum’s Main Gallery from September 13 through December 13, 2014. Citizen Culture celebrates the power of art to spark dialogue, create new modes of civic engagement, and transform the laws by which cities and citizens are governed.”

Bike it! Walk it! Week

Get ready for Bike It! Walk It! Week on Sunday October 4 with a free Bike Skills Rodeo at McKinley Elementary School, 2401 Santa Monica from 9 a.m. to noon. Then, starting on Tuesday, October 7, ditch the car and walk, bike, or hop the bus to school all week long.

Bike It! Walk It! Week aims to show parents and students that there are viable and healthy alternatives to driving to school every morning.

From Bike It! Walk It! Week’s website: “This year’s motto is ‘Bike It! Walk It! Every Week!’ Students, staff and parents are encouraged to walk, bike, scoot, skate or take the bus at least one ‘car-free’ day per week.”

Since Bike It! Walk It! started in 2007 with a student-organized bike to school day, it has become a raging success.

“Approximately 30 percent of District students at 14 different schools participate in the event, avoiding approximately 12,000 car trips,” according to the Bike It! Walk It! website.

This year, the schedule is as follows:

  • Tue October 7 – Roosevelt ES Bike It Walk It Day
  • Wed October 8 – Lincoln MS, Samohi, Olympic HS, Franklin ES and Point Dume Marine Sciences School Bike It Walk It Days
  • Fri October 10 – John Adams MS, Will Rogers, Edison, Grant, SMASH, Muir, McKinley ES, Malibu HS and Juan Cabrillo ES and Franklin ES Bike It Walk It Days
  • Note: Point Dume Marine Sciences will hold Bike It Walk It Day on Oct 8. Franklin ES will celebrate both Oct 8 and Oct 10.
