Council Brainstorming How to Fund Affordable Housing
At its upcoming meeting, the City Council will discuss possible ways of funding affordable housing in the future. The city is facing a major affordable housing funding crunch after the loss of money from its redevelopment agency in 2012 when the state shut down redevelopment agencies throughout California. Before then, the city would give about $15 million a year to nonprofit housing developers to help build new or preserve existing subsidized housing. With the regional housing crisis ongoing, the need for housing, both affordable and market-rate, is dire.
