14TH Street Parking Lot Now Closed To Make Way for Affordable Housing

Date:

(Every week we take a story, or two, from the City Manager’s Newsletter. This story was originally published before the lot was closed.)

We wanted to remind everyone that the public parking lot at 1211-1217 14th Street is scheduled to close permanently on Sunday, June 28, at 10:00 p.m., as the site prepares for the construction of new affordable housing. We recognize this lot has served residents and businesses in the neighborhood for many years, and that its closure is a real change for those who rely on it.

Accordingly, we’re committed to helping the community navigate that transition with as much support and advance notice as we can provide.

The closure of the parking lot is being instituted to make way for the Tierra Apartments, an 82- unit, 100% affordable senior housing development that is being built by Hollywood Community Housing Corporation. The project spans the current lot along with the adjacent property at 1402 Wilshire Boulevard, formerly home to Unleashed by Petco. When complete, the Tierra project will offer 40 affordable apartments for low-income seniors and 40 permanent supportive homes for seniors aged 55 and older who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness here in Santa Monica. Construction is expected to begin in July.

To help residents and businesses through the change, signage at the lot includes a QR code linking to a dedicated landing page on the City’s website, where the community can find nearby mobility and parking options, support services, and information on how to apply for the City’s Below-Market Housing waitlist.

More to come on this topic in the coming months as the affordable housing project gets underway! In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions about this matter!
