SMMUSD to Host Campus Environmental Impact Community Meeting at Roosevelt Elementary

Date:

The following is a submission from SMMUSD. To see some of the ideas they have for Roosevelt Elementary, you can see some proposals in this presentation created earlier this year to support the school bond on the fall ballot.

Join Us! The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) invites parents, staff, students and community members to participate in the planning of campus facilities. The District is planning educational improvements at Roosevelt Elementary and has prepared the school’s campus plan. The District is holding an in-person meeting on Sept. 25, 2024 to take comments from the community. The meeting is scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The meeting is part of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) environmental review process of the campus plan to facilitate the public review of the Draft Environmental Impact Report (Draft EIR). The campus plan’s environmental impacts and the identified mitigation measures, as analyzed in the Draft EIR, will be presented. There will also be an opportunity to provide comments at this meeting, which will be addressed in the Final EIR.

Roosevelt Elementary School: Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024

Location: 801 Montana Ave., Santa Monica, CA 90403, Roosevelt Auditorium

Parking: street parking available

Time: 5:30-7 p.m.

Spanish interpretation will be available.

The meeting will include the following:

·       Overview of the project and the proposed campus plan

·       Discussion of historic resources, CEQA process, and summary of the environmental impacts and identified mitigation measures in the Draft EIR

·       Review project alternatives

·       Opportunities for participants to submit comments

The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA):

The CEQA process is one that allows community members to express their concerns. It also provides the District valuable information/feedback that will be considered when moving forward in the building and design process.

Final EIR and Board Approval: Following this 45-day Public Review Period, the District will provide written responses to all comments received on the Draft EIR and make any edits and changes to the EIR. The Final EIR will be presented to the Board of Education for their review and adoption, including the Mitigation Monitoring Program, Statement of Overriding Considerations and Findings of Fact in winter of 2024.

“Through these site meetings participants will gain a greater understanding of the current status of the school facilities and how improvements will impact student learning and performance,” said SMMUSD Chief Operations Officer Carey Upton. “The school facilities are essentially the ‘third teacher.’ Having modern, updated learning environments engages students in their education.”

Public Review and Comments: The District invites the public to submit comments on the Draft EIR. Agencies and other interested parties, including members of the public, must submit any comments in response to the Draft EIR no later than 5 p.m. on Oct. 31, 2024.

Written comments must be directed to Upton, and received in the offices of the District, or submitted via by e-mail to cupton@smmusd.org. For any questions or to obtain further information about the project please contact Upton via the aforementioned email or by phone at 310-450-8338 x79383.
