History of Widening Main Street: This week’s Street Seen explains along with some great historical photos how all of the buildings on the west side of Main St, from Hollister south to the City limits were demolished in 1926 to widen the street. 

May is Bike National Month:

  • Here is a list of city events that includes Big Blue Bus offering free rides for anyone riding with a bike helmet, Bike to Work Day on May 18, and Kidical Mass group bike ride on May 21. 

SaMo Public Library Hosting “Let’s Talk About Mental Health” Series Throughout May: For Mental Health Awareness Month in May, there is a series of resource tabling events, Positive Parenting workshops, and a spotlight on mental health books for all ages. City Hosts Events and Activities to Commemorate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: Check out this list of events to Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.

Resy Lists Main Street’s CouCou on its Hot New Restaurant Openings List: This article gives Main St some love stating “Adding more oysters, steak frites, and caviar to Main Street, CouCou is the latest to make the strip connecting Santa Monica and Venice one of the most compelling dining neighborhoods. The menu leans French bistro, but there’s enough to keep the beach crowd coming back, like a classic burger, vegetarian French dip, and dynamite cocktails.” CouCou is at 218 Main St in the former Chez Tex space.

Yet Another Big Boston Chef Is Opening Restaurants in SaMo: James Beard Award-winning Tim Cushman has landed here as part of a wave of Boston names finding their way west. More details here on his casual Gogo Ya is opening on 3rd St Promenade this month.

“Route Zero Relay” Kicked Off at the End of Historic Route 66 on the SaMon Pier: Local Leaders and Advocates like Ed Begley Jr called for strong clean car standards to put us on the route to zero emissions: More details here and here is the video with speeches. 

Construction Notice – 4th Street and I-10 Ramp Paving: The street paving at 4th Street and I-10 ramps scheduled for Monday night has been rescheduled due to a material supply issue. Paving will now take place on Thursday night, May 4, 2023 beginning at 8:00 pm and ending by Friday morning, May 5, 2023 at 6:00 am.

Construction Underway at Former Vons Supermarket: Related California secured $385 million for mixed-use development at the site of a former Santa Monica Vons supermarket. Timetable for completion is unknown but plans to have a supermarket there remain. Photo and video update here.

  • DeadEndia Book Launch with Author Hamish Steele: This is a release day book launch event for the deluxe editions of the Eisner Award-winning author’s graphic novels that were made into a Netflix series. More details here.
  • An Evening with Emma Lovewell (Thursday 7pm): Judy Greer leads a discussion based on Lovewell’s memoir chronicling her “path to physical—and mental—fitness that traces her journey to becoming a beloved Peloton instructor and inspires readers to live, learn and love well.” More details here
