Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents reportedly detained several people at a Santa Monica car wash Friday morning, leading city officials to respond publicly and help connect affected families with support services.
The detentions occurred around 10 a.m. at the Santa Monica Car Wash on Pico Boulevard, according to city communications. Officials said they are still working to confirm whether two or four individuals were taken into custody.
In a statement, city representatives said they are ensuring that those detained — along with their families — receive access to available city and community resources. Few details about the ICE operation have been released so far.
Following reports of the enforcement action, the Santa Monica Police Department issued a statement clarifying that it was not involved.
“The Santa Monica Police Department does not participate in immigration enforcement,” the department said in a community message. “Our role is to protect the safety and well-being of everyone who lives, works, or visits Santa Monica — regardless of immigration status.”
Police emphasized that officers do not inquire about immigration status during interactions with the public and encouraged residents to reach out for help or to report crimes without fear. The department listed its emergency number, 911, and its non-emergency line, 310-458-8491.
City officials described those detained as hardworking community members who contribute to Santa Monica’s daily life and economy.
Residents seeking information about legal rights or local resources were directed to santamonica.gov, including the city’s immigration resource page at santamonica.gov/safeathome.
Santa Monica has long been considered in the crosshairs of the federal government due to Trump consigliere Steven Miller’s early life and education here. The city prefers what former Mayor Ted Winterer has called a “box not brawl” strategy with the Trump Administration. But Friday’s incursion seems to be a haymaker.
ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the operation.
