OPA Update 8/8/24: Community Input Needed by OPA for City Council Candidate Forum, Un|Housed Panel Discussion, & Other Things To Do This Weekend

OPA August 12 Monthly Meeting is THIS Monday: This month’s meeting will be at the 2601 Main St. Library starting with food and mingling at 6:00pm provided by Triple Beam Pizza on Main St. We will also be hybrid on Zoom. Here is the Zoom link to join the meeting starting at 6:30pm. Here’s the draft agenda and here’s schedule:

  • 6:00 – 6:30pm: Food, refreshments and mingling
  • 6:30 – 6:45pm: SMPD update 
  • 6:45 – 7:15pm: Santa Monica Fire Department Chiefs
  • 7:15 – 7:30pm: Peter Fenolio, Hospitality Santa Monica
  • 7:30 – 8:20: Board business, including upcoming calendar of events (Make Music Day, July 4 Parade, Solstice Festival, & more)

Community Input Needed by OPA for City Council Candidate Forum: We are part of a planning committee and would like to hear from community members what top concerns you would like to see the candidates address. Please share your thoughts on this short two question survey. The Forum is free to attend on Sunday, Sept. 8, 3:00 – 5:00pm @ Lincoln Middle School Auditorium (1501 California Ave.)…hope to see you there!

Dorothy Green Park Between Lifeguard Towers 25 & 26 Re-Opens: Officially known as Beach Park Number 1, the beach park just south of Ocean Park Boulevard has been closed since late April so the city could install new playground equipment. More details here.

Seeking Community Partners to Help Provide Art Activities, a DJ and / or Performers Aug. 31 at The Block Party (La Gente de Santa Monica) in Honor of LatinX, Afro Latin, Asian -Latinos & Hispanic Heritage Month: “Join us in celebrating the achievements and contributions of the Mexican, Afro Latin, Asian Latinos, LatinX -Hispanic and Indigenous communities of centuries past and present with the City of Santa Monica with this art exhibition for the community.” Please contact steve@thestyleguyde.com for more details.

The Laurel Opens in Santa Monica, Providing Housing for the Formerly Homeless: The city of Santa Monica has welcomed residents to The Laurel, a city-funded Permanent Supportive Housing development that offers 57 apartments to individuals who were formerly experiencing homelessness. The Laurel, located just south of the 10 Freeway in Santa Monica’s Pico neighborhood, is a project developed by EAH Housing. More details here.

Pet Adoption Fees Reduced to $10 Through Sept. 10: The 2023 ‘Clear the Shelters’ campaign led to more than 158,000 adoptions. More details here.

Things To Do This Weekend: 

  • Un|Housed Panel Discussion (Thursday 5-7pm): The SaMo History Museum, in conjunction with its current exhibition: Un|Housed, is hosting another panel discussion on housing. Hear from local experts who serve residents experiencing homelessness from The People Concern, Hand to Hunger Project, Housing Justice Project, and a Skid Row resident and advocate. More details.

  • SMPL at the Beach (Friday 10am – 3pm): “Fun in the sun for all ages at So Cal’s only beachside pop-up library. Join us for a fun-filled day of activities starting with Seaside Storytime with local author Nell Cross Beckerman at 10:15 a.m., sign out books from our curated beach reads collection, play games, or kick back, relax and read in our Surfside Lounge.   • Skate Under the Stars at Santa Monica’s New Seasonal Roller Rink: Roll @ Santa Monica is a new seasonal skating rink that will twirl daily from Aug. 10 through Oct. 14. Join the Grand Opening Celebration on August 10, from 12-2 PM, featuring music and skate performances by LA Skate Hunnies. Aug. 10 – Oct. 14 @ 1324 5th St.https://rollatsantamonica.com/ 
  • Endless Summer C.A.M.P. (Community | Art | Music | Picnic) at Tongva Park (Saturday 11am – 2pm): These Saturday events celebrate community, arts and culture. Bring a picnic and join as artists from across Santa Monica and the LA region share their culture through interactive music, performances, and hands-on crafts. Special performances by local youth will be featured. Open to all. Saturday Aug. 10, features Philippine dance, music and song by Kayamanan Ng Lahi along with Traditional Mexican folklorico dance by Academia de Danza Ballet Folklorico Flor de Mayo’s youth ballet.   • Main St. Farmers Market (Sunday 8:30am – 1:30pm): This Sunday, back by popular demand, it’s the GM Jazz Quartet 10am-1pm with a special performance from the Cabeza de Vaca Cultural Center Hawaiian Dancers at 11am!  Want to learn more about CalFresh at farmers markets and if you qualify, St. John’s will be at the info booth to answer questions.
