OPA Update 8/5/24: 8/12 OPA Monthly Meeting Details, National Night Out, & Other Things To Do This Week

NEXT MONDAY: OPA August 12 Monthly Meeting: This month’s meeting features Santa Monica Fire Department Chiefs, Peter Fenolio @ Hospitality Santa Monica, and more! Hope to see you at the Main St. library for the 6:30pm meeting. Light dinner will be served starting @ 6pm with pizzas generously donated by Triple Beam Pizza @ 2905 Main St.  
THIS TUESDAY: National Night Out 5:30 – 8:30p.m. @ City Hall, 1685 Main St.: OPA will have a table at this annual community-building event promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. Expect FREE music, food, and activities for all ages. SMPD will showcase their various police vehicles and equipment and invite the community to meet police personnel (human and 4-legged alike).The parking structure at Olympic & 4th St. is free that night and Big Blue Bus will be providing free bus rides all night when you mention National Night Out. Construction Notice – Curb Ramp improvements on Hollister Ave 8/5-9/20: “Engineering and street services division is leading the construction of the project which will improve the pedestrian safety around the 6 school sites: John Muir Elementary, Santa Monica Alternative Schoolhouse (SMASH), McKinley Elementary, Edison Language Academy, Franklin Elementary, and Grant Elementary. The construction work is starting with curb ramp reconstruction on Hollister Ave at 4th, 5th, and 6th St. This work adjacent to John Muir & SMASH schools will take place starting August 5th through September 20th. Parking will be limited, and heavy traffic is expected, please follow all temporary construction signs.” Click here for more detailed info.
The Street Seen: 2403 Main St. (@ Hollister): “The existing 2403 Main St is built in 1921 as a butcher shop. An automotive repair shop occupies the building from 1935 to 1961. A furniture design and antiques store is there from 1961 to 1980.” More details here.
SaMo Farmers Markets Celebrate National Farmers Market Week Aug. 4-10: “The week will kick off with a celebration at the Sunday Main Street Market on Aug. 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and wrap up at the Saturday Pico Farmers Market on Aug. 10 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Both celebrations will feature special activities, music, prepared and prepackaged food, photo opportunities and farm stands with locally grown produce.” More details here.
Existing Building Reach Codes Survey: The Office of Sustainability and the Environment has developed a survey to send around to Santa Monica property owners to assist them in gathering feedback on proposed policy options for the Existing Building Reach Code policy they are working on. “The survey is designed to help the City understand community priorities, concerns, and barriers to help develop the policy and structure stakeholder workshops moving forward. The Santa Monica History Museum is hosting its Annual Gala on September 29: This years event, a comedy and variety show, entitled Stands Up for History, is hosted by Nicole Blaine (Crow Comedy Club) and will offer delicious bites and libations from James Beard Award-winning Chef Mary Sue Milliken, a live and silent auction featuring priceless experiences, and an amazing showcase of stories that will entertain, amuse, and move you. Cyanotype & Pinhole Camera Workshop with Camera Obscura Art Lab Artist-in-Residence Marzieh Karimi (Tuesday & Thursday 4pm): “Led by Camera Obscura Art Lab Artist-in-Residence Marzieh Karimi, join us for a fun and immersive workshop where you can learn about the fascinating world of camera obscura and how to make and use a basic pinhole camera to create your own unique artwork. You will also learn the compelling art of cyanotype, a camera-less technique for creating prints. The workshop will take place at the beautiful Annenberg Community Beach House in the Sand & Sea Room. Un|Housed Panel Discussion (Thursday 6-8pm): The SaMo History Museum, in conjunction with its current exhibition: Un|Housed, asks you to save the date for its second panel discussion of the summer on housing. Hear from local experts who serve residents experiencing homelessness from The People Concern, Hand to Hunger Project, Housing Justice Project, and a Skid Row resident and advocate.
