OPA June Monthly Meeting THIS Monday: This month’s meeting will be at the 2601 Main St. Library starting with food and mingling at 6:00pm. We will also be hybrid on Zoom. Here is the Zoom link to join the meeting starting at 6:30pm. Here’s the draft agenda and here’s schedule:

  • 6:00 – 6:30pm: Food, refreshments and mingling
  • 6:30 – 6:45pm: SMPD update 
  • 6:45 – 7:00pm: Santa Monica Fire Department
  • 7:00 – 7:15pm: Rev Janet and Kera Blades-Snell
  • 7:15 – 8:20: Board business, including upcoming calendar of events (Make Music Day, July 4 Parade, Solstice Festival, & more)

OPA Heal the Bay Beach Clean-Up THIS Sunday: The event is 10AM until noon, we meet at Tower 26, Ocean Park Blvd at the beach, supplies are provided and there will be a Heal The Bay speaker to coordinate the cleanup. Parents, students, families and neighbors are all welcome. Email Dave Tann with questions.

Concrete Sidewalk Repairs on Main St: Beginning Monday, June 10, repair work on concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and driveways along Main St. starts on the west side of Main St., followed by the east side of street between Pico Blvd. & Marine Court. Work will be performed in the City right-of-way. Traffic flow will be maintained. More details here.

Sluggish Local Rental Market Reflects National Trend: This SaMo Lookout report summarizes Apartment List research saying “median prices dipping by -0.2 percent in May, marking the fourth monthly drop this year” and “Santa Monica’s -4.2 percent rent decrease over the past 12 months is more pronounced than the -0.9 percent dip for the state and -0.8 percent for the nation, according to data based on the site’s listings.” 

Santa Monica Beach Named Among Top California Beaches: This SaMo Lookout report details that”Santa Monica State Beach has been named one of California’s top 10 spots for “beach bliss” by USA Today, according to the paper’s 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards” and that “The beach was ranked sixth by readers who voted on top picks nominated by travel experts and was the only LA County beach to make the top 10.” 

The Street Seen: 2654 Main (Demised): “In 1987, 2654 Main St, which originated as a Safeway Store in 1938, is sold, and the building partitioned into four retail spaces.” Here’s the rest of the story.

Things To Do This Weekend: 

  • Housing Solutions and the Future of Housing in SaMo (Thursday 6-8pm): The SaMo History Museum, in conjunction with their current exhibition: Un|Housed,  presents an engaging panel discussion. Former KCRW host, Frances Anderton, moderates local housing experts from Community Corporation, Cypress Equity Investments, SMRR and SaMo Planning. More details here.
  • City Council Candidate Debate (Thursday 7pm): Santa Monica Democratic Club is hosting a debate with six candidates @ Thelma Terry Center (2200 Virginia Avenue) and via Zoom. RSVP here.
  • Pico Roots Marketplace Grand Opening (Friday 10am): Community Corp. of SaMo is hosting the grand opening of this marketplace home to diverse, local small businesses, with a DJ, refreshments, and activities. “As Santa Monica’s first and only small business hub, attendees will have the opportunity to interact and purchase unique products from vendors.” @ 1819 Pico Blvd. Register here.
  • Celebrate National Donut Day (Friday): Yup, there’s a day for that too! Holey Grail Donuts will offer a free Holeys promotion titled “Make Any Donut Holey,” where customers receive a free donut hole with any donut purchase.

  • Mycology Workshop @ Main Street Community Garden (Saturday 9 – 11am): Discover the fascinating world of fungi at this workshop.  Learn about mushroom cultivation, identification and their ecological roles.
