SMC Emeritus, a program of Santa Monica College (SMC), will host “Earth Day at Emeritus,” a special event screening short films and clips from works by eco filmmakers Sheila Laffey, Joseph Rosendo, and Nidhin Patel, with a panel discussion on the impact of storytelling in cinema and an audience Q&A moderated by Anabelle Munro, founding Director of the Ethos Film Awards. The event is free and will be held Wednesday, April 22, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Auditorium at the SMC Emeritus Campus, located at 1227 Second St., Santa Monica. Parking is available in the adjacent City of Santa Monica Parking Structure #2. Seating is on a first arrival basis.
“Earth Day at Emeritus” is a collaborative event between Laffey’s SMC Emeritus film class TH ART E30, Dramatic Interpretation Through Movies and the Ethos Film Awards 2026.
Laffey is an award-winning filmmaker and producer who launched and hosted SMC’s Green Screen eco film series for several years. Rosendo is a six-time Emmy® winner renowned for his “Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope” series on PBS. Patel, currently a lecturer at California State University, Los Angeles, is an award-winning film educator and filmmaker bringing his experience working with the Hollywood Climate Summit and film festivals like NewFilmmakers LA and Outfest.
The Ethos Film Awards International Film Festival celebrates purpose-driven storytelling as a means to transcend cultures and languages for audiences from around the globe. The 2026 festival will be held April 21-April 26 at Laemmle Monica Film Center, 1332 Second St., Santa Monica.
