The following is a submission from the City of Santa Monica.
Santa Monica has been named on the Cities A List for reporting year 2024 by the Carbon Disclosure Project, or CDP. This is the top status available from the largest global independent environmental disclosure system which recognizes global leadership in environmental transparency, climate action and resilience planning.
In the announcement made last week, Santa Monica is one of only 112 global cities, or 15% of total reporting cities worldwide to earn this recognition.
Santa Monica was previously recognized for the reporting years 2022 and 2021.
To be recognized on the A List, cities must publicly disclose climate data through CDP’s climate reporting platform and progress tracker, CDP-ICLEI Track, and meet rigorous criteria not widely achieved by cities, including having an up-to-date city-wide emissions inventory, a climate risk and vulnerability assessment, and a published climate action plan.
Transparent disclosure through CDP-ICLEI Track provides a platform for cities to track progress, engage communities and unlock increased access to funding to accelerate solutions and strengthen long-term community resilience.
“Santa Monica is proud to be recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project for its efforts to reduce carbon emissions and create a sustainable, resilient and prosperous community,” Chief Sustainability Officer Shannon Parry said. “Collective action and transparency are critical to mitigating the global effects of climate change and show what’s possible when municipal leaders share best practices in this space.”
