Happy Birthday Marion! Annenberg Beach House Celebrates Birthday of First Resident

Date:

The Santa Monica Conservancy, in partnership with the city of Santa Monica, will host a birthday celebration for the original Annenberg Community Beach House resident, silent film star Marion Davies, on Jan. 25 from 1-3 p.m.

A famed actress and legendary hostess of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Davies lived on the site of the Annenberg Community Beach House throughout the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s, which served as her expansive beachfront estate.

Opened as a public destination in 2009, the Annenberg Community Beach House is a seaside community amenity that combines its historic legacy with contemporary amenities such as a splash pad, playground, open seating, free Wi-Fi, beach recreation areas, cultural programs and events, and Back on the Beach Café.

Happy Birthday Marion! will pay tribute to Davies and the glamour of the era with live music by Janet Klein & her Parlor Boys, a lesson in quick and easy 1920s dance steps led by James Zimmer and Cynthia Harper of the Historical Ballroom Dance Club and a Makers Group fashion show presented by the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles.

From 1–2:30 p.m., event participants are invited to take a special look inside the Marion Davies Guest House, one of the restored historic features from Davies’ original estate. Santa Monica Conservancy docents will be on hand to help guests imagine what life was like for Davies as they explore the space.

The event is free and open to all ages. Vintage attire and costumes are encouraged.
