The Santa Monica College (SMC) Board of Trustees is seeking applications for a vacancy on the SMC Personnel Commission, a five-member public body responsible for the administration of the college’s Merit System. The appointment will be effective December 1, 2025 for a three-year term through November 30, 2028. Applications are due Friday, Nov. 14, 2025 and the application form is available at smc.edu/PCApplication.
Two Commissioners are appointed by the SMC Board of Trustees, two are appointed by SMC’s classified employees through their exclusive representative, CSEA (California School Employees Association). The fifth Commissioner is appointed by the other four Commissioners. The Commissioners are responsible for guaranteeing that employment, retention and promotion for all classified—i.e., non-teaching—SMC employees are based on merit system principles.
To qualify for the Board’s currently open appointment to the SMC Personnel Commission, the applicant:
- Must be a registered voter and resident of the Santa Monica Community College District (“district”), which encompasses Santa Monica and Malibu.
- Must not be a member of the governing board of any community college district or a county board of education shall be eligible for appointment, reappointment, or continuance as a member of the commission. During his or her term of service, a member of the commission shall not be an employee of the district.
- Must support the concept of employment, continuance in employment, in-service promotional opportunities and other related matters on the basis of merit and fitness.
Personnel Commissioners have the following responsibilities:
- The Personnel Commission ensures that classified employees receive fair and equitable treatment.
- Personnel Commissions represent the public’s interest by providing a personnel system dedicated to the hiring and retaining of the best qualified employees.
- Personnel Commissions work in cooperation with the governing board and administrators in the quest for competent employees and good personnel administration.
