OPA Update: Go-Bag Tips for People and Pets, Seven Home Maintenance Tasks Everyone Forgets to Do, & Things To Do This Week

Yesterday’s OPA Newsletter has been lightly edited here to reflect news that broke after the newsletter was first published.

Palisades Fire: For updated information about the Palisades Fire and evacuation notices, check the City of Santa Monica fire update website. Additional updates can be found at CalFire.

Water: Water quality in Santa Monica has NOT been impacted by the fires. A boil water notice was issued to residents in the Pacific Palisades 90272 ZIP code but Santa Monica water has not been affected. Santa Monica Public Works has worked proactively and diligently to ensure a robust water supply for local firefighting if needed. At this time, the city is not experiencing any water flow issues with fire hydrants. As a precaution and to ensure this supply remains available for firefighting, residents are being asked to conserve water as much as possible and turn off their sprinklers.

Air Quality: Current air quality levels are ranging from Very Unhealthy on the west side of Santa Monica to Unhealthy levels on the east side. Please take precautionary measures by staying indoors and reducing unnecessary travel and wearing an N95 mask if outdoors.

Please monitor santamonica.gov and the city’s social media accounts for the latest information and view the aqmd air quality map here. 

Go Bag Tips: Now is a great time to get prepared for an emergency!This LA Times post lists what the LAFD calls “the 6 P’s” to focus on, including people and pets, papers and phone #s, prescriptions, pictures and personal items, personal computers, and plastics.  

This readyforwildfire.org post has a checklist of things to have ready, including 3 days of food and water, a map with 2 evac routes, first aid kit, list of prescriptions, copies of key documents.

How To Recycle Your Christmas Tree: Between now and Jan. 31, Christmas trees can be placed at the curbside or alleyway next to recycling and waste containers on scheduled trash collection days. This SMDP article details “how to dispose of your Christmas tree responsibly.

How the Preserving Our Diversity (POD) Program Helps Seniors Stay Housed in SaMo: This SaMo.gov post is primarily a case study for the program, but has info on how who qualifies and how to apply for the program.

New Homelessness Data: How Does California Compare to the Rest of the Country? “The number of homeless Californians increased just over 3% last year compared to the year before, with more than 187,000 people sleeping on the street or in shelters in the state as of January 2024. Overall, the country saw an increase of slightly more than 18%, and 22 states saw double-digit increases. Just six states, including Wyoming, Tennessee and Maine, saw their homeless populations decrease.” More details here.
