OPA Update 11/7/24: OPA Nov. 11 Monthly Meeting Monday, Bowlmor Building on Pico Demolished, & Other Things To Do This Weekend

OPA Nov. 11 Monthly Meeting Monday: This month’s meeting is the last one of the year. It will be at the 2601 Main St. Library starting with food and mingling at 6:00pm. We will also be hybrid on Zoom. Here is the Zoom link to join the meeting starting at 6:30pm. Here’s the draft agenda and here’s schedule:

  • 6:00 – 6:30pm: Food, refreshments and mingling
  • 6:30 – 6:45pm: SMPD Update (if avail; might not be due to Veteran’s Day holiday)
  • 6:45 – 7:10pm: Expected newly elected City Council-Member Dan Hall 
  • 7:10 – 7:30: Parks & Recreation Director Jenny Rogers
  • 7:30 – 8:30: Board business, including upcoming calendar of events (12/8 Holiday Party, OPA Election, & more)

City Council Candidates Dan Hall, Ellis Raskin, Natalya Zernitskaya and Barry Snell Lead Results: However, more ballots still need to be counted before the results can be finalized. More details here on current status of all the local election matters.

SaMo Rents Dipped Last Month: Median rent is down to $2,310 for a one bedroom & $2,769 for a two-bedroom, but remained the second highest among the 11 LA County cities included in the report. More details here.

Fire Monday AM on 200 block of Bay St Damages Property & Palm Trees: This SMDP report with pictures details the fire where “thankfully no injuries were reported as all occupants in the nearby structures had already self-evacuated.”

Bowlmor Building on Pico Demolished: The building was leveled this week, but it is unknown right now if this means the developers are ready to proceed on their building plans (details in this 2022 report) or if it is simply doing so to counter issues stemming from the empty structure being a target for illegal activities. OPA will update when we know more.

Things To Do This Weekend:

  • Little Blue Dog Run Grand Opening (Saturday 11am – 3pm): You’re invited to the grand opening celebration of Little Blue Dog Run, Big Blue Bus’s new off-leash dog run! This project aims to transform an underutilized landscape alongside Big Blue Bus’s headquarters into a vibrant open green space for our community. Little Blue Dog Run amenities include fenced exercise areas for dogs of all sizes, drinking fountains, trees, and a picnic area with seating.   • Main St. Farmers Market (Sunday 8:30am – 1:30pm): Come join us for a super chill extra fun market with local musician Sophia Vandenberg starting at 9am followed by the GM Jazz Quintet from 10am-1pm!  Also joining us ,YARI Animal Rescue and a new organic farmer, Mama Tree! 
  • The Artist’s Fair (Sunday 9am – 5pm): This outdoor gallery market showcases all different types of artists like painters, woodworkers, jewelry, clothing, sculptures and music! Bringing the community together to enjoy the park in this family dog friendly event! Come enjoy some cool tunes and meet the artists. FREE. Near Tower 25 in Ocean Park (2410 Ocean Front Walk) 
  • Veterans Day Ceremony at the Pier (Monday 11am): Now in its fifth year, the City joins the U.S. Army for a Veterans Day ceremony featuring performances, military demonstrations and a flyover, as well as remarks from senior military leaders and local elected officials. The ceremony, which will take place on the Pier’s west parking deck, is free and open to the public.
