Main St. Summer SOULstice Festival is THIS Saturday (July 13): Main St will be closed to vehicular traffic and transform into a pedestrian paradise all day with vendors and entertainment planned from 12 – 7pm between Pier and Strand. Here is the schedule of events and here is an SMDP write-up about the event and Main St. which says “This year has seen a true entertainment revival on Main Street, one that has continued into July with the return of a standout soiree.” 

Help Requested @ OPA Summer SOULstice Festival Booth: OPA will have a booth from about 11:45 – 4:15pm and could use help staffing it, and especially with setup and take down. More event details here and reply to this email if you’re available to help.

SaMo Rental Market Remains Sluggish: This SaMo Lookout report summarizes this Apartment List report that states “median rent in the city decreased by -0.3 percent during the month, and has now fallen by a total of -4.0 percent over the past 12 months.”

“Venice Resident, Known for Trash Cleanup Volunteer Work, Gets Brutally Attacked on Santa Monica Beach”: “Josey Peters, a Venice resident …was brutally attacked in Santa Monica over the weekend; an incident that reportedly left him unconscious…. Peters described to KTLA how he was bagging garbage near lifeguard tower 25 in Santa Monica around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. People nearby told Peters the suspect walloped him several times before fleeing the scene. A lifeguard on duty told KTLA the weapon was likely a bat. Peters suffered a concussion, broken ribs, a broken collarbone and facial contusions. More details here.

  • Balcony and Container Gardening Class (Saturday 12 – 1 pm): Do not let limited space limit your gardening ambitions! Join Beth Crosse and Joy Tucker, University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners since 2017, at this special free presentation and demonstration. They will focus on container gardening and raised beds discussing benefits, site preparation, key to success, materials and and how to plant. Beth and Joy have shared their knowledge at various venues including schools, farmer’s markets, libraries and the LA County Fair.   • Compost Giveaway at City Yards (Saturday 9am – 2pm): “Join us for Resource Recovery and Recycling’s quarterly compost giveaway on July 13th, 2024 from 9:00am to 2:00pm at City Yards, 2500 Michigan Avenue. Please exit via the back gate near Gandara Park on Stuart.” More details here.
  • Celebrate July being Disability Pride month (Saturday 6-8pm): Help de-stigmatize physical and learning disabilities and support our locals with services and increased opportunities.   • Main St. Farmers Market (Sunday 8:30am – 1:30pm): This Sunday at the Main Street Farmers Market the GM Jazz Quartet is back with a chill vibe for a hot summer Sunday from 10am-1pm.  Special guests this week include the City of Santa Monica Clerks Office and YARI Animal Rescue also at 10am and starting at 11am ..
