The following is a submission from SMMUSD.

U.S. News and World Report has ranked Malibu and Santa Monica high schools in the top five percent for 2024 out of nearly 18,000 public schools in the nation. Malibu High ranked 573 and Santa Monica High School (Samohi) ranked 850, nationally.

Malibu High moved up in the rankings from the prior year reflecting the hard work and efforts of SMMUSD educators and students. In addition to the national rankings, U.S. News ranked Malibu High School 77 and Samohi 120 out of 2,616 high schools in California, while countywide rankings are 26 for Malibu and 48 for Santa Monica.

“We’re honored to have our high schools be ranked so highly by the 2024 U.S. News and World Report Best High Schools,” said SMMUSD Superintendent, Dr. Antonio Shelton. “This achievement reflects the dedication of our educators, staff and administrators in preparing students for success in both higher education and their careers. Congratulations to our school teams and students for their hard work and visionary spirit.”

To create the rankings, U.S. News focused on six factors: college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates.

In 2023, Malibu ranked 93 in the state and 660 in the country and Samohi ranked 106 in the state and 736 in the nation. Olympic High School is not included in this ranking as an alternative school.
