Horvath Moves on Metro Safety

Date:

The following is a press release from the office of Supervisor Lindsey Hovarth.

Lindsey P. Horvath, Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and Member of the Metro Board of Directors, read in a motion at yesterday’s Finance, Budget, and Audit Committee to address disturbing violence across the system. The motion calls for enhancing Metro’s multi-layered public safety presence and response, and for Metro’s three contracted law enforcement agencies –  the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles Police Department, and Long Beach Police Department – to join the Metro Board at their June meeting.

Supervisor Horvath shares:

“We are looking at a ten percent increase in the cost of Metro’s law enforcement contracts next year without any increase in presence. This is unacceptable. We need safety personnel on every Metro bus and rail line to keep our riders safe. The motion I introduced calls for a cost analysis of all public safety entities that patrol the system to inform what visible presence is not only necessary, but most effective to make our system safer for everyone.”

I look forward to welcoming Sheriff Luna, Chief Choi, and Chief Hebeish to Metro, and to the difficult and necessary decisions the Metro Board must make to address this safety crisis once and for all. The future of our system depends on it.”

The motion will be heard by the full Metro Board when it takes up the budget at its Thursday, May 23 meeting.
