Opponents Fail to Talk Developer into Scaling Down Gelson’s Project: SaMo Lookout published this write-up detailing the efforts of the the Santa Monica Coalition for a Livable City (SMCLC) and the developer, Cypress Equity, did not reduce the project on the Gelson’s site

Things To Do This Weekend: 

  • Pier Locals Night (Thursday 3:30 – 9pm): The Pier will be rolling out the red carpet for Santa Monicans for a curated series for locals, by locals. Gather your friends and family and head down to the Pier for amazing entertainment including youth activities, a car show, local DJs and live music from local bands, art exhibits, and so much more! You really won’t want to miss this incredible and unique outdoor setting to unwind, all while celebrating Santa Monica. More details here.
  • Every Day is Earth Day at Ishihara Park Learning Garden: Ishihara Park Learning Garden celebrates Earth Month with a gaggle of activities at our Monthly Pancakes in the Park Program. Saturday, Apr 20, 2024 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Ishihara Park Learning Garden 2909 Exposition Blvd.
  • Earth Day Beach Clean-Ups (Saturday): There is the Nothin’ But Sand Beach Clean Up at the Pier (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.) and Project Save Our Surf Beach CleanUp at Tower 26 (11 a.m. – 2 p.m.). 
  • Heal The Bay Aquarium Earth Day Celebration (Saturday 11am – 4pm): Enjoy educational exhibits and demonstrations for ocean enthusiasts of all ages. Visitors can enjoy family-friendly crafts and face painting, partake in a scavenger hunt, learn all about California’s state flower the poppy and even take an Earth Month pledge to show their commitment to sustainability. @ Heal the Bay Aquarium 1600 Ocean Front Walk.   • Santa Monica Inaugural Poet Laureate Workshop & Reception: Meet Santa Monica’s first Poet Laureate at an introductory poetry workshop followed by a reception to celebrate the start of their two-year term Saturday, Apr 20, 2024 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM Main Library 601 Santa Monica Blvd. 
  • Main St. Sunday Farmers Market: Celebrate Earth Day at the market with special guests Lazy Dog Mountain Band at 10am. YARI Dog Adoption and face painting also at 10am and a Sound Bath on the lawn at noon. Here’s the full April / Earth Month calendar of events
  • The Artist Fair – An Outdoor Gallery Market in the Park (Sunday 10am – 5pm): This space was created “so artists and people that are creating pieces by hand can have a safe space to sell more upscale items without the hassle of having cheap vintage, or cheaper items that dilute the aesthetics and vibe of the event. All vendors are either artists, painters, designers, metal workers doing jewelry, wood workers making amazing house pieces and other items but the important thing is that everything is handmade and sold by the artist itself.   • Santa Monica Education Foundation Wine Auction (Sunday): The Ed Foundation is the only organization that raises funds for all Santa Monica public schools. Since 1982, donors have funded more than $23 million in arts and academic programs to ensure that all students thrive.   • Earth Day Tree Hugging (Monday 5 – 6pm): Gather at Santa Monica’s beautiful landmarked Moreton Bay Fig Tree located in the courtyard of the Fairmont Miramar Hotel. Free-to-the-public.
