City of Malibu and SMMUSD Announce Milestone in School Separation Efforts with Tentative Agreement on Revenue Sharing

Date:

The following is a press release from both the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and City of Malibu.

The City of Malibu and the Santa Monica-Malibu School District (SMMUSD) are pleased to announce a significant milestone in their ongoing school district separation efforts. After thorough discussions and collaborative efforts, both parties have reached a tentative agreement on the revenue sharing arrangement, marking a crucial step forward in the process of establishing an independent Malibu Unified School District. This tentative agreement is subject to approval by the Malibu City Council and the SMMUSD Board of Education.

This milestone achievement reflects the commitment of both the City of Malibu and SMMUSD to uphold guiding principles that prioritize equity, fairness, and local control in education. By working together, the parties have demonstrated their dedication to ensuring that every student, whether a resident of Santa Monica or Malibu, has access to quality education and that decisions regarding educational policies are made with the best interests of the community in mind. Throughout the negotiation process, those key guiding principles have guided discussions and decision-making.

The tentative agreement on the revenue sharing arrangement is a testament to the collaborative spirit and shared vision of the City of Malibu and SMMUSD. It represents a significant achievement in the journey toward establishing an independent Malibu Unified School District, one that will provide the community with greater autonomy and decision-making authority over educational policies.

The City of Malibu and SMMUSD will be holding community workshops with their respective residents to share the details of the revenue sharing agreement and its implications. Dates and locations for these workshops will be announced in the coming weeks.

As we celebrate this milestone, we recognize that there is still work to be done. However, with continued collaboration and cooperation, we are confident that we will build a stronger foundation for the future of education in both communities. We look forward to further engagement with the community as we move forward in this process.
