Students letter to City Hall, 2/6/2025

February 6. 2025

Dear Nikimia Newsome, and the Santa Monica City Council,

I am writing to you as a delegate of the student body of Santa Monica Highschool to formally express the opinions of students within our city on the subject of ongoing legislative changes enacted under the administration of the President, Donald J. Trump.

Trump continues to sign executive orders and conduct the government in a way that fundamentally threatens the institutions of government, and the rights of millions of people. We have many concerns that we feel deserve to be addressed; on the protection of our democracy; on the protection of our education; on the protection of students from federal agents, specifically ICE; on the protection of immigrant communities; on the right to freedom of expression and protest; on the protections of our trans and queer communities, especially students; on the protection of our educational curriculums, specifically those focusing on civics, history, gender, race, sex, etc.; on the possibility of establishing self sufficient funding for public schools away from federal funding; on the protection of healthcare access, specifically reproductive and gender care.

As constituents of this city hall, we expect a response, as well as resolutions, be proposed to the council to further push legislation that vows to protect the rights of our communities. We hope to continue to work with this council to ensure such policies are enacted.

Below and attached are the signatures of students, as well as teachers, and faculty, who either participated or supported the student walkout against the Trump administration on February 6th, 2025, and who also formally request that the City Council pass resolutions to immediately address the concerns of its constituents aforementioned. (Gender care, queer and trans protections, environmental action, protection of our education from censorship/ revisionism, and the rights of activists.)

Graciously,

xxx
