It’s billed as the largest volunteer day on the planet, bigger than Santa Monica, bigger than California, bigger even than all of America. Coastal Cleanup Day has become a world-wide volunteer event, where literally millions of pounds of waste is cleaned off of beaches around the world.
Last year in California alone, 62,668 volunteers participated in Coastal Cleanup Day. Together, we removed over 728,289 pounds of trash and 143,291 pounds of recyclable waste from over 1,500 miles. Los Angeles County boasted over 50 cleanup sites located at various beaches and inland waterways.
And of course, Santa Monica is one of the largest sites. For nearly a quarter of a century, Heal the Bay has led the local effort, helping thousands of volunteers work local to help make a global difference.
Heal the Bay has coordinated the Los Angeles County Coastal Cleanup Day for 23 years. L.A. County sites span from Long Beach up to Malibu and inland to the L.A. River Confluence, among approximately 60 other sites. This year, volunteers are to meet at Bay Street and Ocean Avenue at 9 am for the three hour event.
