Welcome to the only issue of volume twenty one of Swish, a periodical with recaps and photos of Santa Monica Family YMCA youth basketball games, and other pertinent info such as announcements and updates from the program.
After 7 years of running this program, the theme of this season was:

I have retired from running the program, and will be focusing on my home health physical therapy practice to help seniors in the Santa Monica community.
I truly enjoyed helping many of the younger generation enjoy participating in youth sports, and helping the community through a pandemic and the Palisades fire.
This Fall season, the Santa Monica Family YMCA had 5 divisions of youth basketball, with the Copper and Silver divisions having 5 teams each, the Bronze and Platinum divisions with 4 teams each , and the Gold division had 8 teams.
We are a coed league with players that are ages 5 to 15. Our emphasis is that we are a developmental league, and we want the kids to not only enjoy playing youth sports, but to benefit from the three principles of the YMCA:
Youth Development, Social Responsibility, and Healthy Living.
I was able to partner with the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation which provided jerseys, grants, and clinics to help develop our youth. I was ever grateful for their support of the program. Many thanks to the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation: Kiesha Nix, Richard Harris, and Jeanie Buss for helping the league become the premier youth basketball program on the Westside. Many thanks to UCLA Health for sponsoring the Junior Lakers jerseys.

For the theme of this season’s team names, I went with an overall theme of music with nicknames of musicians, groups, songs, or albums. There are additional themes to each division and dedications to those that influenced my life.
Many of these game summaries will have lyrics or paraphrasing of lyrics from songs by artists that influenced me throughout my life, especially in my younger years.
“For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
Yes, it was my way” (Frank Sinatra)(Paul Anka)
Scrimmage Weekend

Copper

Scrimmages of two teams playing each other, and three teams playing a round robin.
The division theme was classic American muscle cars with a name related to the overall music theme of the league.
Bosses

Rav Karwal has returned to the Copper division with his daughter Soraya, and Vic Bhalla has joined the coaching ranks with his son Nolen.
My family had a Mustang car when I was a kid, although the Boss was the best and most intimidating. The Boss was also the nickname of Bruce Springsteen whose music was influential during my high school days.
Barracudas

Amir Yakira has returned for a second season of coaching with his son Atlas, and veteran coach Thomas Casarella will help with his son Tommy.
Barracuda was a song by the rock group Heart which featured the Wilson sisters who influenced the music world with their power driven songs, and musical talents, and paved the way for other female rock musicians to succeed. The Barracuda is a powerful car that only the most experienced drivers can handle. Unfortunately, Kevin Hart found out the hard way, as his birthday gift almost killed him, when he crashed it in the infamous Mulholland Drive area.
Eliminators

Casey Novell has returned to coaching in the Copper division as her daughter Jane enjoys playing with her friends.
“Eliminator” was an incredible album from ZZ Top that took over radio and MTV during my youth, and led to my discovering the Texas rock sound. The Eliminator muscle car was a beast on the highway, leaving many in the dust.
Corvettes

Coaches Ivan Gallegos with his son Aiden, and Joe Abrahams with his son Caleb have returned to defend their championship from last season in the Copper division.
“Little Red Corvette” was the song that put Prince and the Revolution on the map. Both he and I are from the Twin Cities, and ironically my wife is Apolonia, which is also the same name of the actress who played his girlfriend in the movie “Purple Rain”.
I loved Corvettes as a kid, and found them to always be classy.
Fleetwoods

Fellow Trojan alum Scott Roberts returns to coaching in the division, with his son Bryce as a player in the league.
One of the most influential rock groups of the late 70’s and early 80’s, Fleetwood Mac had many number one hits, but most importantly to me, they created the fight song “Tusk” for my Alma Mater USC. As Scott and I say: “Fight On!” ✌️✌️
I owned a Cadillac Coupe de Ville, but I was fascinated with the Fleetwood for its powerful engine, although my 425 V8 was fun.
Bronze

Scrimmages of four teams playing each other.
The overall theme of the league is music. The divisional theme is the North American Soccer League, as I played goalkeeper through my childhood, and played semi-professional as an adult.
Blizzard

Brayden Stoll returns to the Bronze division to help influence the younger generation.
I wasn’t necessarily a fan of Ozzy Osbourne, but I certainly was a fan of guitarist Randy Rhodes who was the guitar virtuoso taken from us too soon, and was the guitarist on the album “Blizzard of Oz”. The name comes from the Toronto Blizzard that featured Jomo Sono, the great South African player, who was an MVP in the NASL. Also, hailing originally from the city of Toronto, was Canadian rock legend, Bryan Adams, who had a string of hits during my youth.
Cosmos

Alemayehu(Alex) Tilahun has come back to coach in our league, and he has brought his son Matthew to conquer the Bronze division
Cosmos Factory was an iconic album from Creedence Clearwater Revival(CCR) that kept the San Francisco based band at the top of the charts as they were the biggest band in the world in the early 70’s, and often played on the phonograph in our home. The New York Cosmos were one of the top soccer teams in the world that featured the greatest player ever, Pele.
Kicks

“Kick” was the amazing album from INXS that followed their other smash album “Listen Like Thieves”. INXS was one of the most revered Australian rock groups till the tragic end of life of lead singer Michael Hutchence. The Minnesota Kicks was my favorite and local NASL team for which I attended many of their summer soccer camps, and idolized goalkeeper Tino Lettieri.
Hurricane

Faisal Rashid has returned to coach in the division, and with his son Zayden, they look to defend their Bronze division title from last season.
“Rock you like a Hurricane” was the hit song from Germany’s most famous rock band, the Scorpions, that gave them worldwide recognition. The Hurricane was a nickname given to Bob Dylan who was from my home state of Minnesota, and was very influential in our household on the family phonograph player. The Houston Hurricane was a NASL team that featured America’s top soccer player, Kyle Rote Jr., who was not just a great soccer player, but also won the Superstars competition three times as he competed against the best athletes from other sports.
Silver

Scrimmages of two teams playing each other, and three teams playing a round robin.
The division theme was current or past WNBA teams to honor the girls that have participated in our program with a name related to the overall music theme of the league.
It should be noted that the past three “Player of the Year” awards has gone to female players. You can see the following article of the most recent winner with a picture of the past three winners at the following link:
Sun

Justin Strock has returned to coach his son Corbin and his friends in the Silver division.
Waiting for the Sun was an album from the L.A. based band, the Doors. The Doors had many memorable songs that I would play many times in my room at night. KC and the Sunshine Band was the first album that I owned as a young kid, and enjoyed all the different instruments featured in his band. Jeff Porcaro was originally from Connecticut which is where the WNBA team, the Sun, currently play. Jeff Porcaro was the co-founder, drummer, and lyricist of the great 80’s band, Toto, that had numerous hits that I would listen to on the radio. The Connecticut Sun had Tina Charles who had the most field goals in WNBA history.
Mercury

Phil Volken has returned to coach in the Silver division, and his son Phoenix will help the team rise to the top.
Freddie Mercury was the heart and soul of the legendary rock band, Queen, which had many incredible and lasting songs that will be forever listened to till the end of time. The Phoenix Mercury is a WNBA team rich in history that the legend, Diana Taurasi, spent her entire 20 year career.
Rockers

Monisha and Ryan Toteja have returned to coach in the Silver division, and have brought their talented son Rayden to lift the team to new heights.
The Cleveland Rockers were a former WNBA team that featured Merlakia Jones as their best player. Cleveland is the hometown to the late Benjamin Orr who co-founded the iconic band the Cars with the late Ric Ocasek. Cleveland is the home to the late comic/singer Martin Mull who I had the pleasure to know, and had many discussions about his roles on “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman”, and “Fernwood 2 Night”. The most significant rocker to come from Cleveland is Chrissie Hynde who created the Pretenders that had some of my most favorite songs that I still listen to this day, and she and Ray Davies of the Kinks(another band that I enjoyed) had a child together. And of course, Cleveland is the home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Fever

The combo of Bing Sheng with his son Lincoln, and Alex Wang with his son Owen and his daughter Olivia, have joined forces again to take on the Silver division.
Full Moon Fever was the iconic album from Tom Petty in which he used his Heartbreakers bandmates, and several bandmates from the supergroup, the Travelling Wilburys. The Indiana Fever is a current WNBA team that has Caitlin Clark on their roster, but also had superstar Tamika Catchings who played her entire 15-season WNBA career with the Fever. Indiana is the home state of rock legend, John ‘Cougar’ Mellencamp; and, the birthplace of my favorite group as a young child, the Jackson 5. When I was very young, our family apartment was J5 which made me the envy of the neighborhood.
Sting

Coach Jeremy Stanton has returned to coaching in our league, as he and his talented son River will help their team strive for success.
I idolized the musician Sting, and was the biggest fan of the Police, and also enjoyed Stong’s portrayal of Ace Face in the Who movie, Quadrophenia. The Charlotte Sting was a former WNBA team that featured the player Dawn Staley who would later become the current coaching legend at South Carolina University.
Gold Rosters Summer 2025

8 teams had a scrimmage against one of their division rivals.
Music that has influenced me through my life is the overall theme; however, the names of the teams also are connected to a color that has been part of a Laker jersey throughout their years in the NBA.
Men in Black

Coach Keith Muenze with his son Leon, Coach Ben Ketai with his son Emet, and DJ Jacobs with his son Buck have all joined forces to make them a triple threat in the division.
Johnny Cash was the Man in Black, and had many songs that were inspirational and very story telling. AC/DC came out with “Back in Black” after the passing of their lead singer Bon Scott, and would become one of the greatest selling albums ever with its hard rock sound and bravado.
Goldens

Coach Jennifer Lynn has returned to the Gold division with her son Oliver, as they look to take off and fly high.
Robert Plant of the iconic band, Led Zeppelin, is often referred to as the Golden God. David Bowie had the hit “GoldenYears” as was sometimes referred to as the Golden Child.
And of course, I have a golden retriever whose name is Bear who I adore as much as he adores me.
Silvers

Coaches Johnny Hong with his son Josiah, and Eugene Travnikoff with his son Auden are having another go around in the Gold division.
Growing up in the Midwest, one could be influenced greatly by the music of Bob Seger and the Silverbullet band from Detroit. After all, “Old Time Rock and Roll” made Tom Cruise forever famous for dancing in his underwear to the song in the movie “Risky Business”. The Sylvers were an American R&B family vocal group from Watts, and had a number of fun dance hits when I was a kid.
Purple Haze

Coaches George Edelman and Noah Verleun have combined forces to take on the division. George has his son Theodore, and Noah has his sons Soren and Linus.
Often considered the greatest rock guitarist ever, Jimi Hendrix was a master musician who put his heart and soul into his music. “Purple Haze” was one of my favorite songs growing up.
Blue Boys

Jumping up a division, Phillip Cardona and Idan Geva have brought their sons Brooks and Sahar respectively to reach the top of the Gold division
The Blue Boys is the original name of The Rolling Stones, and since the day I was born, I have listened to their songs. Former bassist Bill Wyman and I share a birthday. “The Blues Brothers” was a favorite movie of mine, and featured their music along with Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles. The Chelsea Blues are my favorite football club and I had the privilege to meet the legendary Chelsea superstar Didier Drogba.
Pearls

Coach Bing Sheng is doing double duty with coaching his second team with his son Elliot, and the coach Ali Safavi has returned with his son Saum.
Janis Joplin was my late mother’s favorite singer, along with Billie Holiday. Janis’s nickname was “The Pearl”. Ironically, if you take the P and S off the team name Pearls, you have the name of my late father Earl. Minnie Pearl was a legendary performer at the Grand Ole Opry for over 50 years, first appearing in 1938. Her performances were known for their comedy and signature “How-DEE!” greeting. I included her in the team name to honor coach Ali’s dedication to his alma mater Tennessee University.
Blondie

Nicholas Walker is back to coaching in the Gold division, and will have a profound influence on his players.
You can see Nicholas on his series of videos “Dribblin with Nick”
Deborah Harry was Blondie, who not only influenced the rock music scene, but laid the beginnings of rap music with her style and class. Another female musician with her platinum blonde hair that made waves in the 90’s was Dale Bozzio with her band Missing Persons, as she belted on popular songs that are still played today.
Yellow Subs

Coach Armando Gonzalez has come back to coach in the Gold division with his son Pablo, as they will instill their teamwork style with the players.
You cannot get any more iconic than the Beatles who had the song and movie “Yellow Submarine” that children still sing to this day. So many songs that we still enjoy and sing along through our lives.
Platinum
Scrimmages of four teams playing each other.
Staying with the overall theme of music, each team is a nickname of a famous musician and also a former or current Laker.
Professors

One of our all-time most popular coaches, Joe Tilley, is back in the Platinum division to help guide the players on and off the court.
The late Neal Peart of Rush, was known as “The Professor” and considered the greatest rock drummer of all time. Neal was a member of our facility at the time of his passing, and I knew Neal from my travels on my motorcycle as he would pass me on the famous Mulholland Snake, and then pop his head into the gymnasium to watch the kids play. I do miss him, but his memory lives on. The Professor was the nickname for former Laker coach Paul Westhead who helped lead the Lakers to the NBA title in 1980 during Magic Johnson’s rookie season
Mammoth

Coaches Johnny Hong and Idan Geva are combining to coach their second team in the league, as Johnny has his son Judah, and Idan has his son Lavi. They look to continue to improve on their performance from last season.
Mammoth was the original name of Van Halen, the iconic rock group from Pasadena. When I first moved to California, I lived in Pasadena near David Lee Roth, and then later, in the neighborhood where Eddie and Alex Van Halen grew up. They set the standard for their high energy music and shows, and Eddie was the master guitarist with his innovative techniques. Mammoth was a nickname often given to Kareem Abdul Jabbar, the legendary center for the Lakers.
Godfathers

Our most talented young coach, Brayden Stoll, will be leading these young players to attain new heights in their game, as he coaches his second team in the league.
The Godfather of Soul is James Brown, he was charismatic with his singing and dance moves on stage, and helped to put soul on the map. Chuck Berry is the Godfather of Rock and Roll, and helped to lead the way for future artists such as Elvis and the Rolling Stones. The first ever rock concert that I attended as a young kid, was to see Chuck Berry as he did his famous “Duck Walk”. The Godfather was the nickname of Pat Riley who led the Lakers to multiple NBA championships.
Kings

Armando Gonzalez is coaching his second team in the league, with his amazing and dedicated son Diego as his top player.
The King of Rock n’ Roll is Elvis Presley who paved the way for so many of today’s performers, and Michael Jackson was the King of Pop. Both were influential in my life growing up with their great rhythms and beats. The Los Angeles Kings are my favorite hockey team, and as a hockey goaltender, my style of play is modeled after Rogie Vachon. The King is the current nickname for Laker LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

The Pearls stayed tough and “Try, Just a Little Bit Harder” (Janis Joplin) and had good play from Dylan R and Elliot S as they both made a couple of buckets, and Harrison B converted free throws; but, it was too dominant of a performance for the Men in Black, as Archie L and Buck J made the scoring column with assists from Emet K, as their team wound not be “Beating around the Bush” AC/DC) and went on to the victory.

Blue Boys vs Men in Black
My impression as the scorekeeper of Men in Black:
“A bolt of fear went through him.
As they thundered through the sky.
For he saw the riders coming hard.
And he heard their mournful cry.
Yippie-yi-o, Yippie-yi-yay, Ghost riders in the sky” (Johnny Cash),
as they galloped to a big lead in the first half with multiple points from Liam K, Beau Z and Rohan P. But the Blue Boys would not be “Shattered” (Rolling Stones), and reminded themselves “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It)” (Rolling Stones) and got players on the scoreboard, as Auggie F and Milos T each had a couple of baskets, and Sahar G and Landon W were making assists to Brooks C and Wyatt M for scores, and had a much better second half. In the end, the rebounding and long court two handed passes by Player of the Game-Zayd S “Call Me the Breeze” (Lynyrd Skynyrd) would be the big difference maker for the Men in Black as they would hold on for the win.

Mammoth vs Professors

As far as games go for this weekend, the best of the matches would be this one that was a “Twist and Crawl” (English Beat), as was “Simply the Best” (Tina Turner) to end the weekend. At first, it was the Professors that would be “Living in the limelight” (Rush) as they controlled the first half with Max P driving the lane for scores, and making a deep ‘3’, Elliot I making free throws, and a pair of treys from Jerald W; Mammoth responded with a late start of scoring with “I don’t feel tardy” (Van Halen), and got Zachary L and Lavi G to score. In the third quarter, the Professors had bank shots go in from Brandon I and Quest D to have a sizable lead to end the third frame.

But this lead would not hold up, as the “Cradle Will Rock” (Van Halen), and Mammoth would go on a run that included Judah H and Jarvis W with power moves and spin drives to score, and with time winding down, Player of the Game-Krishna A went 4 for 4 from the free throw line, and made a key steal to put his team up by 3 points with seconds to go. It looked as if all was lost for the Professors; but,
“When something’s going wrong (You must whip it)
Now whip it
Into shape
Shape it up
Get straight
Go forward
Move ahead
Try to detect it
It’s not too late
To whip it
Whip it good!” (Devo)
The Professors inbounded the ball to Jerald W who looked at the clock, lined up behind the arc, and whipped it to the hoop as the buzzer sounded, and it bounced off the backboard and in for the tying bucket, earning him Player of the Game honors. As this was “The End” (Doors) to a fun and exciting weekend of basketball, as “Everybody is working for the weekend” (Loverboy).

Godfathers vs Kings
I found myself refereeing another match this week, so I hope to have gotten some “Respect” (Aretha Franklin), by now, after all “We’re caught in a trap. I can’t walk out” (Elvis). The first quarter had the Silvers get baskets from Auden T and Sam W, the Yellow Subs with baskets from David H and Ray S, as the quarter ended with a “Sympathy for the Devil” (Rolling Stones) score of 6 to 6. “What I’d Say” (Ray Charles) is that scoring would pick up for the rest of the game, as the Silvers got Rocco T on the board in the second quarter, and Alex B and Krsna P scored in the second half; the Yellow Subs went down “The Long and Winding Road” (Beatles) with Declan W making a ‘3’, Mateo C using the backboard effectively, and Player of the Game-Juliana H scoring and rebounding against her other team, to give the win to the Yellow Subs, leading the Silvers to feel “You Dropped a Bomb On Me” (Gap Band). But Juliana H and the Yellow Subs represent:

Professors vs Godfathers

This would be the final game that my son Dominic would play for the YMCA program, and he put in the best performance that he could, given it all that he had, which he had been doing for the last 11 years that he had been involved with YMCA youth basketball “It was long ago, seems like yesterday” (Smithereens). This could be the last game for coach Joe Tilley who has really given it his all over the last couple years to help develop the kids in our program. “Tell me, how long you gonna stay here, Joe?” (America). After all Joe, “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice” (Rush).

For a fun final match, we divided the teams up equally, and gave the win to both teams, and invited the Golden Girls, Juliana H and Ray S from the gold division as they had “Oh, What a Night” (Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons) playing two games in a row. But Mammoth would be “Coming to your emotional rescue” (Rolling Stones), and spread the ball around in the second half, with Lavi G, Zachary L, and Trajan B were “Waiting on a Friend” (Rolling Stones) Caleb S to get open beyond the arc and down low for their assists, as he had a “Live and Let Die” (Wings) half, as he had an “Eruption” (Van Halen) of three ‘3’s, baskets down low, and free throws to come from behind and grab the lead for good in the final minute to give Mammoth the victory.

Why don’t you tell me what’s going on? (Fleetwood Mac). Yes I will, it’s the 3rd place match in the in-season tournament. The first half saw all the points for the Bosses scored by Nolen B as he was “Born to Run” (Bruce Springsteen); the Fleetwoods were having some trouble finding their big men down low, “Well, there’s too much traffic, I can’t pass, no” (Sammy Hagar), but Player of the Game-Austin L eventually found his teammates Parker M and Bryce R to assist them with their scores, “Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin” (Sly & the Family Stone), as they had the lead going into halftime. Corvettes vs Barracudas
“You Might Think” (Cars) that the Corvettes would run away with this tourney final, but not so fast, because the Barracudas came to play, as this game would be a “Rollercoaster” (Ohio Players). It started out well for the Corvettes, “And I could tell it wouldn’t be long” (Joan Jett & the Blackhearts) before Caleb A had his usual amount of points, as he scored early and often, and finished the match with 7 for 8 from the free throw line, Max F dropped his “Cherry Bomb” (Runaways) shots, and Aiden G had the “Eye of the Tiger” (Survivor) with his rebounds for putback points to give their team a comfortable first half lead. The “Question” (Moody Blues) for the Barracudas would be if they could mount a comeback, and the answer was yes, as they would be “Comin’ straight on for you” (Heart), and have Quetzali Z and Atlas Y making layups, and Ronan S making free throws to take a small lead late in the match. With time winding down, the Corvettes needed some “Purple Rain” (Prince) to come down and save the day, and “This Magic Moment” (Drifters) was for Players of the Game, Ethan C and Jack E, who made big shots late in the match to take the lead back, and it was for the Corvettes “Just What I Needed” (Cars) to get them the win and the division title.

Blondie vs Goldens
The Goldens struck first with baskets from Keshav S and Player of the Game-Oliver L with their “Head over Heels” (Go-Gos) (Tears for Fears) drives to the hoop for scores. Blondie were not in “Destination Unknown” (Missing Persons) mode, and knew where they were going, because coach Nicholas Walker has a “I Like to Rock” (April Wine) attitude, and had his team stop “Dreaming” (Blondie), and play hard on defense to create turnovers by Player of the Game-Megan O and Ari L, that led to points by Ezra E and Naphat W to take the lead at halftime. The Goldens would have a strong third quarter to get close to taking the lead back, as Player of the Game-Oliver L and Niam P started making ‘3’s as they were assisted by Sebastian A. Blondie was “I can hear you coming. And we know what you’re after” (Red Rider), and needed to put up an “Eminence Front” (The Who) with Players of the Game, Megan O and Myles S blocking shots to stop the “Landslide” (Fleetwood Mac) of points from the Goldens, and “Get ready, ’cause here I come” (Temptations) as Beno O and Ezra E scored big buckets late in the match to win 3rd place in the “B” tourney.

Blue Boys vs Silvers
Both teams would “Handle with Care” (Traveling Wilburys) the ball to avoid turnovers; however, the Silvers had a “Long Cool Woman” (Hollies) in a black jersey controlling the court, Juliana H “Driving down your freeways” (Doors) to score and put the Silvers up early, and Auden T added additional scores to give their team a good lead at halftime. The Blue Boys would regroup at halftime, and Sahar G was a “Jumping Jack Flash” (Rolling Stones) as he went by everyone to score, and “Wild Horses” (Rolling Stones) Milos T and Wyatt M were the recipients of clever passes from Landon W to put points on the board. But the Silvers would have “Good Times” (CHIC) and keep their lead as Players of the Game, Nicholas C and Sam W, would “Let it roll tonight” (Little Feat) with multiple baskets to win 3rd place in the “A” tourney. For the Blue Boys, “You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, well, you might find, You get what you need” (Rolling Stones).
Purple Haze vs Pearls

These two teams would battle back-and-forth as it went wire to wire with often players rushing to the basket and getting caught for traveling to which the players were asking the referee: “Oh, won’t you, Gimme three steps, gimme three steps, mister” (Lynyrd Skynyrd), but the referees reminded the players “Well, I never been to Spain” (Three Dog Night). The first half saw Purple Haze get points from Theodore E as he took the transition passes from Julian Z to get to the hoop for scores; “But God bless the child that’s got his own” (Billie Holiday) as the Pearls got baskets from Max A, Harrison B, and Clive L to take a narrow halftime lead as they were “Walking on a Thin Line” (Kinks). In the second half, the Pearls had Nanda A score on a turnaround j, Henry F with a trey, and a deuce to boot by Saum S; however, Purple Haze would get a layup from Keegan E, and brothers and Players of the Game, Soren V and Linus V, would “Get it Hot” (AC/DC) as they were making shots from all over the court, and teammates were asking “Let me stand next to your fire” (Jimi Hendrix), because the “Heat is On” (Glenn Frey), and teammates took advantage by locking down the defense to keep the narrow lead for the “Sweet Emotion” (Aerosmith) of winning the “B” tourney.
Men in Black vs Yellow Subs

We would all “Come Together” (Beatles) for this final game of my YMCA career. “We’re gonna ride it till, We just can’t ride it no more” (Randy Newman). As for the game, the Yellow Subs got out front early with Players of the Game: Hoky B and Pablo G anchoring the defense, and Nathan G with a deuce and three. Also the Yellow Subs had a triplet of field goals from Declan W, and ‘3’s from David H and Ray S on assists from Juliana H and Mateo C. Men in Black would take over in the second half as Players of the Game: Archie L and Buck J would dominate the boards and score points, Luca T led all scorers with 16 points, and Beau Z and Liam K would score transition baskets to lead their team to the undefeated season. Congratulations to Men in Black on a perfect season because “It’s a Long Way to the Top” (AC/DC), and they showed how it’s done. At halftime, everyone gave thanks to me, and I returned the thanks to everyone. ‘As Tears Go By” (Rolling Stones), it was emotional, and I truly will miss these kids, and I wish everyone the best, and I will reflect:
“Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday” (Beatles)

This Issue’s Profile
Each issue of the Swish has a profile of a coach, player, or someone in the program who inspires all of us involved in Santa Monica YMCA youth basketball.
This final issue’s profile is really just about me, and some of my thoughts. It has been a pleasure to help this generation of youth enjoy participating in youth sports, and to give valuable life lessons that I hope will carry over for the rest of their lives. We need this generation of youth to excel more than ever, my advice: “Let the children have their way, Let the children play, Yo le digo, caballero, Que los niños le quieren jugar, Ellos tienen que jugar”(Santana)
My motto for these kids and me is from Bill Withers “Lean on Me”, because even now my time is done at the YMCA, I will still be here, to be your friend, and I want you to be my friend too.
“Sometimes in our lives we all have pain. We all have sorrow. But if we are wise, We know that there’s always tomorrow. Lean on me, when you’re not strong. And I’ll be your friend. I’ll help you carry on. For it won’t be long, ‘Til I’m gonna need, Somebody to lean on. Please swallow your pride, If I have things you need to borrow, For no one can fill those of your needs, That you won’t let show. You just call on me brother, when you need a hand. We all need somebody to lean on. I just might have a problem that you’ll understand. We all need somebody to lean on. Lean on me, when you’re not strong. And I’ll be your friend. I’ll help you carry on. For it won’t be long ‘Til I’m gonna need Somebody to lean on. If there is a load you have to bear, That you can’t carry, I’m right up the road, I’ll share your load, If you just call me (call me). If you need a friend (call me) call me uh huh (call me) if you need a friend (call me).” (Bill Withers)
I want to thank my late mother Roberta who was a “Motorcycle Mama” (Sailcat) as she would ride her motorcycle of in the sunset, with her stereo blasting music; and my late father Earl, originally from San Antonio, Texas who never forgot his roots as he loved TexMex food and music, “Ay te Dijo en San Antonio” (Flaco Jimenez). I miss them, and their influence on my life, as they both taught me how to rollerskate, to which I would become a semi-pro rollerhockey goaltender.
I want to thank my wife Apolonia and my son Dominic for enduring and being on this journey with me. They sacrificed a lot, and I’m truly a blessed man for having their love and support through these past seven years.
And of course, many thanks to all those who volunteered and participated in the youth basketball program at the Santa Monica Family YMCA. This program would not have been successful if it wasn’t for all those who helped and supported the development of our youth to be the leaders of the future.
As for me, “Now, I’m just gonna sit at the dock of the bay. Watching the tide roll away” (Otis Redding)
“Goodbye stranger, it’s been nice” (Supertramp), God bless and thank you, Paul
The following is an interview of myself, from Robert Clark who is not only my friend, but also a longtime head referee for Make it Official, the company run by Julian Perlman, that supplied the referees for the YMCA youth basketball program. Robert has been there from the start of my tenure to the end, guiding me along the way with his advice and instruction to me and the volunteer coaches in my program. We saw it all, and we went through it together. I couldn’t have done it without his help and support. I’m ever grateful that he agreed to interview me for the final issue of the Swish.
Santa Monica YMCA Youth Basketball Program
An Exit Interview with Program Coordinator Paul Drew
Interviewee
Paul Drew
Former Youth Basketball Program Coordinator
Santa Monica YMCA
Interviewer
Robert Clark
Context:
This interview was conducted in late December 2025 following Paul’s retirement from his role as Youth Basketball Program Coordinator at the Santa Monica YMCA. The conversation reflects on program philosophy, leadership decisions, challenges in youth sports, and the long-term impact of community-based athletics.
Robert:
You took over for Pete Arbogast. Was there a transition period between the time he ran the league and when you assumed leadership?
Paul:
Yes. During that period, a young man named Christian Gonzalez was brought in to run the program. He held the position for approximately six months.
Paul (continued):
Christian was pursuing a career as a veterinary technician, which ultimately became his focus. During that period, the organization was aware that I was interested in taking over the role. I informed them that I could bring support from the Los Angeles Lakers to help strengthen the program. Initially, there was some hesitation, and I believe my previous supervisor wanted Christian to be given the opportunity to lead. However, the role proved to be too demanding for him, and he eventually left to attend veterinary technician school.
Robert:
Were you working with Christian during that time?
Paul:
Not initially. Christian was running the program independently at first. Later, I became his assistant and worked in that capacity for a period of time. When he was ready to leave in the spring of 2019, I took over the role as coordinator.
Robert:
When did the league begin using certified officials? Was that during Pete’s tenure?
Paul:
Yes, that change occurred during Pete’s time.
Robert:
So there was a shift away from volunteers?
Paul:
Correct. Initially, Pete relied on volunteers across all divisions, but that approach was unsuccessful. Eventually, certified officials were brought in to handle the older league games, while volunteers continued to officiate the youngest divisions. Volunteers were paid ten dollars per match.
After I assumed responsibility for the program, I gradually began phasing out volunteers for some of the younger games as well. Parents increasingly preferred professional officials, particularly because volunteers often lacked the experience to manage difficult situations when issues arose.
Robert:
Did Pete pass along any suggestions or guidance when you were preparing to take over?
Paul:
Yes, he did. Pete was very instrumental during that transition. He gave me guidance on organizing schedules and forming teams. Pete previously conducted team drafts where parent-coaches would meet in person. He had an exceptional ability to evaluate players and could clearly explain each child’s skill level. He organized players into rounds based on his statistical assessments.
Paul (continued):
The challenge with that approach was that I did not have the same depth of knowledge Pete possessed. Additionally, parents often had specific requests regarding which children their kids played with and which days they were available. Because of those factors, I decided to begin creating the teams myself.
Robert:
And how did that process go?
Paul:
It was challenging at first, but Pete offered helpful ideas. One thing he said, jokingly, was that if you ever have a team go undefeated, you are a bad coordinator. The goal, he emphasized, was to keep the teams as balanced as possible.
He also provided advice on organizing games and maintaining competitive balance across the league. Overall, he gave me a great deal of insight and was supportive of me taking over. Prior to his retirement, he had already informed me that he was stepping down and had suggested that I consider assuming the role.
Robert:
Taking over the program?
Paul:
Yes.
Robert:
Pete had a unique approach to rules and game management for developmental players. When you took over, did you already have a clear vision for how you wanted to manage the games and rules, or did your approach evolve over time as you determined what was most effective for those players?
Paul:
I had coached under Pete for several seasons, so I was very familiar with his approach. As a result, I retained many of the rules he had established. However, I knew certain aspects needed to be adjusted and refined, particularly for developmental players.
One of my priorities was re-emphasizing to both parents and players that this is a recreational developmental league. Often, parents came in with the mindset that this was a club-level program and believed their child was on a path to professional basketball. I had to clearly explain that if they were seeking a competitive club environment, this league was not be the appropriate fit.
I also believed that every team should include one or two newer or less experienced players who needed additional development. That philosophy was central to how I managed the league.
Robert:
So Pete’s structure inspired your approach but adapted over time?
Paul:
Yes. Pete provided valuable insight into how the league functioned, and I built on that foundation. I made adjustments not because his approach was wrong, but because certain changes better served the players and the flow of the games.
Robert:
For example, when my son Ethan was playing, Pete had a system where fouls were tracked and free throws were taken at the end of each half.
Paul:
I eliminated that rule early on due to time constraints and because it disrupted the flow of the game. I felt it was important to return to a more traditional basketball structure.
Pete also emphasized ensuring that every child had an opportunity to score. While I agreed with that principle, the execution became confusing for parents, particularly in how points were recorded. I adjusted the approach to focus on giving each player opportunities throughout the season, recognizing that not every child would score immediately, but that they would over time.
Ultimately, my goal was to maintain the flow of the game and make it feel more like real basketball, while still prioritizing development, especially given the time limitations we faced.
Robert:
Since taking over the league, the Santa Monica YMCA has consistently used certified officials. How do you think that has benefited the league?
Paul:
Stability has been the biggest benefit. Certified officials also help establish clear boundaries for parents. Parents can be the most passionate and sometimes the most critical spectators. Having professional officials helps manage this dynamic.
With certified officials, there is clear authority on the court. It prevents parents from approaching the court, confronting scorekeepers, or attempting to influence games. It also helps regulate volunteers who may believe that keeping score allows them to intervene in game decisions, which it does not.
Parents quickly realized the league had structure and consistency. That was one of the most common feedback I received. I made it a priority to communicate league rules clearly at the start of each season and to re-emphasize them in weekly emails when necessary.
Paul (continued):
I also clarified that Make It Official established these rules and were designed to protect the players. Once parents understood that professional officials were there for their children’s safety, expectations shifted and behavior improved.
Robert:
It also matches my experience.
Paul:
Over the years, there were occasional incidents where I had to address parent or coach behavior. That is simply part of youth sports. Early on, I noticed challenges with some coaches, which led me to introduce a formal coaches’ presentation. That presentation was helpful not only for education, but also for accountability. Coaches who chose not to attend could no longer claim they were unaware of the rules.
League rules were clearly documented and distributed. While we did have a small number of coaches who could not continue in the program, the vast majority were excellent and supportive.
Pete once told me that ninety percent of parents are supportive and helpful, while ten percent are difficult. That reality exists everywhere, including at the high school level. I had many parents tell me they had experienced chaos in other leagues. Even if they did not always agree with my decisions, they appreciated that there was structure and that inappropriate behavior was addressed.
My priority was never to be liked by everyone. As long as the kids were developing, enjoying the game, and having a positive experience in youth basketball, that was what mattered most to me.
Robert:
What are you most proud of from your time running the Santa Monica YMCA youth basketball program?
Paul:
One of my proudest accomplishments is seeing three female athletes recognized as Players of the Year. Supporting and developing girls’ participation in basketball was always a priority for me.
I was also proud of seeing players advance to compete at the high school level. Equally meaningful, however, was watching kids who I knew would not pursue high school basketball still find joy in the sport and remain involved in the program in other ways.
Some of those players became interested in coaching, officiating, statistics, or other supportive roles within the program. Brayden Stoll is an excellent example. He is a young man who has demonstrated tremendous growth and commitment, and I believe he has a strong future as both a coach and a referee. His contributions to the program have been outstanding.
Paul (continued):
It was also especially meaningful to see players with ADHD or autism enjoy participating in sports and carry that experience forward into increased confidence in other areas of their lives after leaving the basketball program.
On a personal level, watching my own son participate in the program from age four and a half to the end of my tenure has been very special. As we are both retiring from the program, that chapter has been particularly meaningful to me.
Robert:
What influence did your ability to secure a Los Angeles Lakers partnership have on the YMCA youth basketball program?
Paul:
Their partnership had a significant impact in several ways. First, it gave the kids a tremendous sense of pride and confidence. Wearing Junior Lakers jerseys made them feel special and valued.
Second, the sponsorship provided financial grants that allowed us to support children who otherwise could not afford to participate in the league. Those kids were able to play basketball, and many of them went on to develop strong life skills beyond the sport. I am very grateful to the Lakers Youth Foundation for that support.
The foundation also sponsored youth clinics where children had the opportunity to feel like “a star for the day.” These clinics helped build confidence, leadership, and fundamental skills. Each summer, we hosted a clinic sponsored by the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation, where legendary Crossroads coach Daryl Roper who led skills training, drills, competitions, and lessons focused on both basketball and personal development.
Being part of the Junior Lakers program had a powerful emotional impact on the kids and their families. This was especially significant in the aftermath of the Palisades fires, when many children had lost access to their schools, programs, or even their homes. The program gave them a sense of community and stability during a difficult time.
Robert:
Many YMCA organizations partner with the Clippers instead. Do you have insight into how those sponsorship decisions work?
Paul:
Yes. When I first took over the position, I approached a longtime friend and client, Jeanie Buss, then owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. I asked whether it would be possible to designate our basketball program as a Junior Lakers program. She explained that there was an existing agreement in which the Clippers partnered with YMCA organizations, while the Lakers partnered with Boys and Girls Clubs. However, because our YMCA operated independently, an exception was possible.
Paul (continued):
What I later learned was that, prior to my arrival, the Santa Monica YMCA had previously been a Junior Lakers program but had ended that relationship and moved to a Clippers partnership. That decision created some strain with the Lakers Foundation, particularly with its leadership at the time. As a result, I had to work to rebuild trust and mend those relationships.
The foundation ultimately asked Daryl Roper to visit the program and evaluate it. After his visit, she agreed to move forward with the partnership. The Lakers Foundation provided grants, uniforms, and clinics, and our program became a model that informed how they approached other partnerships.
That said, the arrangement was always understood to be closely tied to my involvement. Over time, changes in ownership and foundation leadership altered priorities, and it became clear that continuing the partnership would no longer be sustainable or beneficial for either side. I ultimately advised that the relationship not continue after my departure, as the conditions were no longer conducive to representing the Lakers Foundation in the way it deserved.
At that point, I felt the timing was right for all parties to move on.
Robert:
Do you have any advice for whoever is ultimately hired to replace you? Are there principles or rules you hope they continue to uphold?
Paul:
It will be challenging, particularly because I am not involved in the hiring process. I have, however, shared guidance on what I believe should be avoided. Specifically, I advised against hiring anyone who operates a club basketball program, as that presents a clear conflict of interest.
In my experience, individuals with strong ties to club programs may be tempted to shift a recreational league toward a club-style model or use it as a pipeline to outside programs. I observed situations where youth sports began to feel transactional rather than developmental, and that is something I worked hard to prevent.
I raised these concerns directly with leadership when I noticed trends that suggested pressure on players to join certain clubs in order to gain competitive advantages at the high school level. I was not alone in voicing these concerns, and meaningful discussions did take place as a result.
I do have confidence in my most recent supervisor, Caleb, to identify the right person. The larger challenge, however, lies with upper management. Often, coordinators are asked to take on responsibilities far beyond basketball alone, which can dilute the effectiveness of the role.
Robert:
Do you expect the position to increase compensation?
Paul:
Based on what I understand, the increase would likely be modest. That said, the value of the role extends beyond compensation, and the expectations placed on the position should reflect that.
I have encouraged parents to remain supportive of the program during this transition. YMCA basketball has always been recreational and developmental, and it will continue to be so. My message to parents has been to allow the new coordinator the freedom to lead in their own way, rather than constantly comparing them to my approach.
I often use an analogy to explain this. The band Rush continues to tour despite the passing of their longtime drummer, Neil Peart. They brought in a new drummer, and while some fans were initially hesitant, audiences ultimately came to support the music itself. The experience remains meaningful, even as staff changes.
What makes that story especially meaningful to me is that Neil Peart was once a member of the Santa Monica YMCA. He occasionally attended games and supported the program. In the same way, I encourage families to support the program itself and give the next coordinator a genuine opportunity to succeed, regardless of who they are.
If people remember why they are there—because they value YMCA basketball and what it offers kids—the program will continue to thrive.
Robert:
Are you currently a YMCA member?
Paul:
I’m not sure I am anymore. Now that I’m no longer an employee, my membership may have ended. Regardless, I don’t believe I plan to return as a member.
Robert:
Even as a regular member?
Paul:
I was a member before becoming an employee, but at this point I’m not interested. My wife and I have been looking at joining a local gym instead.
Paul (continued):
There are several issues that contributed to that feeling, and returning would feel awkward. I don’t think it would be healthy or productive for me.
Robert:
Do you see yourself ever becoming involved in the program again, perhaps as a coach, at some point in the future?
Paul:
Possibly, under different circumstances I might consider helping in some capacity. As things stand now, I would not feel comfortable returning even as a referee. I think my presence would invite comparisons or second-guessing, which would not be helpful to the program or to whoever is running it.
At this stage of my life, I am focused on my work as a home health physical therapist. I am seeing more patients than ever and helping elderly members of the community, and that work has become my priority.
Robert:
What does the future hold for you? What do you see yourself doing next? Where do you see yourself in five years? Is there anything on your bucket list?
Paul:
In the near term, I’m returning to roller hockey as a goaltender. I took a few seasons off, and earlier this year I was fortunate to win a championship in the top division. I’m excited to return to that part of my life.
Professionally, I am expanding my work as a home health physical therapist. I’m now working with additional staffing groups, seeing more patients, and focusing on helping older adults in the community. That work is both meaningful and sustainable, and it’s where I intend to focus my energy.
Looking ahead five years, I expect to still be working within the Santa Monica community, likely in healthcare. I remain open to opportunities to support youth programs if the right situation arises, whether through schools, community organizations, or other institutions. I’ve always believed in staying open to ways to give back.
Robert:
Anything on your bucket list?
Paul:
My wife and I are about to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. What matters most to me now is spending more time with my family. The job required giving up most weekends for many years, and I’m deeply grateful to my family for their patience and support.
Paul (continued):
I don’t have a specific bucket list beyond living a balanced, happy life. Having weekends back means more time with my family, my dog, and the ability to travel more freely. That, in itself, feels like a gift.
Robert:
Do you feel a sense of relief stepping away?
Paul:
Yes. There is relief, though the ending was emotional. The final game made it very real that this chapter was closing. While it was difficult, it also lifted a tremendous amount of stress. The work had become increasingly demanding, especially given the broader challenges people are facing in society today.
My priority has always been what is best for the kids. At this point, I felt I could no longer offer more than I already had, particularly without key partnerships that supported the program’s mission. Leaving felt like the right decision.
Robert:
Before we wrap up, I want to say that I genuinely appreciated working with you. In over twenty years of officiating, one of the things that stood out about the Santa Monica YMCA was that you consistently supported the officials. As long as we were professional and doing our jobs, we knew you had our backs. That kind of administrative support is rare, and it mattered.
Paul:
That means a great deal to me. I always believed officials were essential to the program’s success. My philosophy was to treat referees as respected guests and partners. Your feedback over the years helped shape how I communicated expectations to parents and coaches, and much of what appeared in my weekly emails came directly from those conversations.
The program was never just about developing players. It was about developing coaches, referees, scorekeepers, and young leaders. Seeing volunteers become certified officials, coaches advance to higher levels, and participants discover paths in analytics, leadership, or community service is what made the work meaningful.
I’ve heard people describe the program as one of the premier youth basketball programs on the Westside. That reflects the collective effort of everyone involved. My goal was always to create a place where families felt safe, supported, and proud to bring their kids.
Robert:
It has been a remarkable run. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have been part of it, and I wish you nothing but the best moving forward.
Paul:
Thank you. It truly was a good ride.
