Sion Roy Announces Campaign to Replace Ben Allen in the Senate

Date:

Dr. Sion Roy is the first major candidate to announce for the 2026 Senate Race to replace Ben Allen, who is termed out of office. Roy, the vice-chair of the Santa Monica College Board of Trustees, is a resident of Malibu and draws on his personal experiences with the recent fires to inform his campaign.

“Like so many other residents of Malibu and the surrounding communities, our family lost our home in the devastating Palisades fire. In Sacramento, I will push to cut the red tape and bring resources back to the district to help us quickly and safely rebuild our communities,” Roy writes on his Instagram announcement of his campaign.

Roy has twice been elected to the SMC Board and has had the support of the Santa Monica Democratic Club, Santa Monicans for Renters Rights and other progressive advocacy groups.  Last year, he endorsed the “United Democratic Slate” for Santa Monica City Council which swept the four seats in the City Council election.

In 2022, he ran for the open seat now held by Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur. While it’s too early for political groups to make endorsements, former Assemblymember Richard Bloom made an early endorsement of Roy yesterday.

“Sion Roy is an accomplished public servant,” Bloom began. “On the Santa Monica College Board he has expanded educational opportunities, championed new programs, and worked with state legislators on behalf of SMC…I look forward to bringing his leadership to Sacramento.”

Professionally, Roy is a cardiologist and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harbor UCLA. You can follow his campaign at Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter/X..
