Weekend Events: Buy Local, 9/11 Memorials and the Santa Monica Classic

One of the most anticipated events of the year is tomorrow’s “Buy Local Health and Fitness Festival” is this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the SM Civic Center Surface Lot, 1855 Main St. The Festival is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

14199199_10157461521075707_5848503667596180828_nThis free community event will music, pop up shops + food vendors, interactive fitness classes, Bike Rodeo + lots of opportunities to connect to Your Community!  Local business will provide expertise, advice, health screenings + free product samples + will also be selling items to promote a healthy + happy lifestyle for the entire Santa Monica community.  Businesses from every neighborhood will be there!

Included in the events are the President’s Challenge Fitness Course for Kids (poster on the right) and the “best fitness trainer in Santa Monica” challenge. If you’re attending, look for the Santa Monica Next booth, say hi to Scott or Abby, and grab a Santa Monica Next frisbee while supplies last.

One of the most anticipated 5k/10k races of the year for mid-distance runners in Southern California is the Santa Monica Classic. This year’s race is this Sunday, and is sold out, but there will be some street closures that could inconvenience the unaware traveller. Get all the information, here. Good luck to everyone competing!

A more solemn event this Sunday will be the memorial ceremony remembering the 15th Anniversary of the September 11th Attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. To honor their memories and selfless sacrifice, the Santa Monica Fire Department will hold its annual remembrance ceremony consistent with the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ recommended protocols. All four of our community fire stations will participate. City staff, as well as the public, especially neighbors of the fire stations, are encouraged to attend at any of the fire stations listed below, promptly at 6:45 am. The ceremony should last no longer than 20 minutes.

Station 2 222 Hollister Avenue.
Station 3/4 1302 19th Street.
Station 5 2450 Ashland Avenue.

An artifact from the Ground Zero site resides on the second floor of the Public Safety Facility (333 Olympic Drive, Santa Monica CA 90401) just outside the Santa Monica Fire Department’s administration office and is open for viewing by the public during normal business hours.
