Santa Monica students and families are being encouraged to leave the car at home this week (October 5-9) as Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! Week returns with a series of activities promoting walking, biking and public transportation as ways to get to school.
Through the week, K-12 students attending school in Santa Monica can ride Big Blue Bus for free. Families are encouraged to try walking, biking, scooting or taking transit instead of driving for school trips. Students can use a GoPass TAP card or show a valid school ID to ride for free. Anyone can ride for free on Wednesday, October 7, for Clean Air Day.
The program has local roots. Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! began as Bike It Day in 2007, when the Santa Monica High School Solar Alliance launched an effort to encourage students to bike to school and raise awareness about sustainability. What started as a single-day event eventually expanded to schools throughout the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and became a weeklong celebration featuring bike trains, walking school buses, transportation education and safety activities.
This week’s OPA Newsletter breaks down the city-wide events this week, but check with your local school to see what events are happening in your neck of the city.
