OPA Update 2/8/24: Mayor Phil Brock to Speak at Monday’s OPA Meeting, Public Input on Gelson’s Project to Mount Once More, Ray Garcia Takes Over the Stoves at The Rose in Venice, & Things To Do This Weekend

OPA Feb. 12 Monthly Meeting Monday: This month’s meeting will be at the Beach House CoWork (2219 Main St. @ Strand) starting with food and mingling at 6:15pm. We will also be hybrid on Zoom. Here is the Zoom link to join the meeting starting at 7:00pm. Here’s the draft agenda and here’s schedule:

  • 6:15 – 7:00pm: Food, refreshments and mingling
  • 7:00 – 7:15pm: SMPD update
  • 7:15 – 7:45pm: Phil Brock, Mayor
  • 7:45 – 8:30: Board business including event scheduling, kicking off other key 2024 priorities, and more!

Public Input on Gelson’s Project to Mount Once More: This SMDP article details that “while public comment has stayed dormant for some time, discussions will soon ramp up once again on a divisive large-scale housing project. On March 4, the City Council Chambers at City Hall will hold a public hearing by the Architectural Review Board to review a proposed housing project at 2601 Lincoln Blvd., which would replace the Gelson’s grocery store and accompanying retail center with 521 apartments in twelve 5-story buildings.”

The Street Seen – Delfina Hotel: This week details the history of the The Delfina Hotel at 530 Pico Blvd. @ 6th St, which was built in 1972 as a Ramada Inn and it’s evolution to a Le Méridien Delfina today.

Animal Shelter at Full Canine Capacity, Foundation Sponsoring All Dog Adoptions: “It’s very hard to see so many great dogs arrive at the shelter and then be overlooked for many months,” More details here. View dogs available to adopt at the City website.

New Vehicle Charging Stations at Joslyn Park: New EV charging stations will be installed beginning February 13. The stations will be located at the north end of 7th Street between Strand Street and Kensington Road. Work is scheduled to be complete in late March. More details here.

Ray Garcia Takes Over the Stoves at The Rose in Venice: Garcia first made a name on the Westside helming the popular Fig restaurant inside the Fairmont Miramar and now is back out west managing one of LA’s busiest restaurants with plans to refresh the California Italian menu that chef Jason Neroni previously oversaw for seven years. 220 Rose Ave. More details here.

  • 3rd Annual Santa Monica King Tides Celebration (Friday 7:30 – 9:30am): “King tides” occur when the orbits and alignment of the Earth, moon, and sun combine to produce the greatest tidal effects of the year. Climate Action Santa Monica is organizing a morning meetup at Heal The Bay Aquarium this Friday to mark the annual occurrence, discuss the relevancy of rising tides in consideration of climate change, and collect images for scientific documentation of the tides for the Coastal Commission.” FREE @ Heal the Bay Aquarium, 1600 Ocean Front Walk.
