Welcome to the second issue of volume twelve of Swish, a periodical with recaps and photos of Santa Monica Family YMCA youth basketball games, and other pertinent info such as announcements and updates from the program.

This Summer season, the Santa Monica Family YMCA has 5 divisions of youth basketball, with the Copper and Silver divisions having 3 teams each, the Bronze and Gold divisions with 4 teams each, and the Platinum division with 5 teams

We are a coed league with players that are ages 5 to 14. Our emphasis is that we are a developmental league, and we want the kids to not only enjoy playing youth sports, but to benefit from the three principles of the YMCA:

Youth Development, Social Responsibility, and Healthy Living.

We are partnered with the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation which provides jerseys, grants, and clinics to help develop our youth. We are ever grateful for their support of our program. This past month, the Laker Youth Foundation had Axiom Events put on a clinic for players 7-9 years of age featuring professional trainers and legendary Crossroads High School coach Daryl Roper that taught the kids skills, fitness, and valuable life lessons. We truly thank all that were involved in giving these kids a valuable learning experience.

SAT 9/9/23 WEEKEND #7

Copper
Players vs Stones

In honor of the World Cup of Rugby starting this weekend, the first quarter was a scrum battle, with the only basket by the Players, Jaxon Oxendine, but then he got hot in the second quarter with 3 swish shots, and teammates River Stanton and Lior Vaisburd added buckets. The Stones got their scoring going in the second half as Josephine Carey, Zayden Rashid, and Owen Wang had baskets, and Alex Wang and Aidan Seet provided good defense. The Players were able to hold onto victory as Esme Chan made key assists to teammates including Player of the Game, Jaxon Oxendine who sealed the deal with a late basket in the fourth quarter.

Miracles vs Meters

Honoring the World Cup of Rugby continued with more scrums and line-outs as the first half ended with a low score with buckets by the Miracles Faizan Khan, and the Meters Charlie Hackett and Ocean Yaghoubzadeh. In the second half, other Miracles got into the scoring column as Mai Ly Pariser and Liesha Aggarwal each had a basket, along with rebounds from Liam Desante and Olivia Ruiz. The Meters full court press in the final quarter allowed them to get the victory as Elliot Israels had two baskets in the final quarter, and strong defense by Leo Yaghoubzadeh and Alexander Melamed helped to ensure the victory. The Meters Charlie Hackett was Player of the Game for being the leading in points and steals for the match.

Spinners vs Supremes

The Spinners took an early lead on baskets by Sammy Weil and Logan Cappiccille, but the Supremes got rolling as Alden Wong had a couple of deuces and treys, and Jason Gaines, Rayan Chibane, Eugene Edouarzin, and Kay Roberts each had a basket to get the Supremes the halftime lead. The Spinners scored more of their points in the second half as Redeat Gebeyehu, Sammy Weil, and Logan Cappiccille had field goals, and teammates Sam Affleck, Jack Meyer, and Henry Kendall played strong defense. But the Supremes were stronger down the stretch as Michelle Guinzberg continued to improve with her skills as she outrebounded the opponent, and Ibrahim Ally and Player of the Game Dominic Drew each had a couple of baskets to give their team the victory

Cameo vs Godfathers

There weren’t a lot of tries in this match, oh wait, sorry, I’m still thinking about the World Cup of Rugby, pardon my digression! But seriously, it was low scoring thanks in part to good defense by Cameo Rohham Taherian, Oliver Harris, Max Oganes, and Ryan Yousefi, and with points from Coen Haynes, Liam Katz, and Ming Zhu, Cameo had the halftime lead. However, things would change in the second half, as the Godfathers as they “got up and offa of that thing, and did better” with Player of the Game Mariama Belew, Jarec Garibay, Abdullah Jooma, and Diego Gonzalez scoring points, and Sean Dobbs and Kayhler Tomlinson getting rebounds, and gritty play from brothers Nelson: Ross and Spencer. The match was close in the final minutes, but key free throws made by Jarec Garibay and Diego Gonzalez ensured the comeback victory for the Godfathers

Platinum Impressions vs Gap

First quarter scoring for the Impressions came from 2 baskets each from Jack Phelan and TJ Turner; and the Gap had baskets each from Darien Jones, Olana and Amen Alemayehu, Aayan Lakhani, and Antonio Rodriquez. In the second quarter, the Gap[ had Ryan Negusse make the scoreboard with a field goal; and, the Impressions had Rowan Booher make a basket, and a trey and an “And1” from AJ Evans to give their team a narrow halftime lead. In the second half, the Impressions had Louis Meehan-Smith make the scoreboard, along with continued scoring from TJ Turner and Rowan Booher. The Gap was able to take a small fourth quarter lead on the strength of a “3” from Olana Alemayehu and three “3”s and free throws from Darien Jones to hold onto a narrow victory.

Contours vs Lakeside

Yours personally had to referee this match, and it was an exciting one to be part of. The first quarter belonged to the Contours as Parker Cappiccille and Nicholas Huether led their team in scoring, but Lakeside stayed close as Gabriel Chibane had a strong quarter that included the conversion of three free throws. The second quarter went to Lakeside as Dylan Kravitz lit it up from behind the arc with a couple of treys, and Dagmawi Ayele made free throws. The Contours Matthew Scholze was the only scorer for his team in the second frame. The third quarter saw Lakeside pull ahead with Ryan Chambers nailing a “3” from downtown, Kai Halpert with a putback, Gabriel Chibane with an “And1”, and Dagmawi Ayele continuing his makes from the charity stripe. The

third quarter had the Contours staying in striking distance as it carried into the fourth quarter as Hunter Esposito-Doi was perfect from the free throw line and had two key buckets down the stretch, and teammates Nicholas Huether and Max Baracy added two buckets each in the fourth quarter. Lakeside got the lead on a strong fourth quarter from Player of the Game, Ryan Chambers, as he had two “3”s and two “2”s to give his team a narrow lead; however, the Contours finished the match on the strength of the rebounding and drives to the lane by Player of the Game, Parker Cappiccille, to have it tied at the end. At the end of the day, a great game ended in a tie, now go home and kiss your sister!

Copper
Express vs Stones

A dominant performance by the Express as five different players scored which included the young four year old twins of Shay and Player of the Game Kai Belldegrun, Theofilos Manolesis, Sofia Pulisani, and Luke Sarley. The Express also had steals from Beck Britto and Benson Berry. The Stones had a made free throw from Grayson Hahn, and rebounds from Owen Wang, Alex Wang, and Noah Wolfe.

Bronze
Coasters vs Chi-Lites

Big first half for the Coasters, as Aiden McCabe, Decker Amos, Sean Murphy, and Rome Ricks had field goals. The Chi-Lites got their scoring going in the second half as Jonas Ketai had 4 buckets and Stanislau Zhizhenka had a basket to narrow the gap, and Rocco Tomas helped to get rebounds, but the Coasters kept the lead as Sola Nomoto, Tyler Enayati, and Renzo Anfosi had steals, and Nicholas Rivas and Bodhi Kothari grabbed rebounds, and Player of the Game Rome Ricks scored another basket to lead the Coasters to victory.

Drifters vs Parliaments

The Drifters have a habit of playing nail-biters in recent games, and today would be no different. The first half saw the Drifters get a couple of baskets from Killian Georgaris and one bucket from Saum Safavi, as teammates Chase Ajiboye and Jett Shung controlled the boards; the Parliaments had a basket each from Oliver Farrar, Faizan Khan, and Mai Ly Pariser, along with steals from Oscar Farrar to have a tie score at halftime. The second half saw defense reign supreme, as the Parliaments as Olivia Wu and Jakob Sroka were locking down the middle, and the Drifters had Cetine Travnikoff and Leo Belldegrun shutting down the perimeter. The Parliaments got another bucket each from Mai Ly Pariser and Faizan Khan. The Drifters got a basket each from Pablo Gonzalez, Chase Ajiboye, and Player of the Game Killian Georgaris who also was the top rebounder and difference maker in a tight game, as his team held on to win by a single basket. I have to fix my fingers again!

Silver
Meters vs Bar-Kays

Physical play dominated the first half, but the Meters were able to get a basket from Leo Yaghoubzadeh, and three made field goals from Charlie Hackett. The Bar-Kays showed resilience as Oliver Lynn, Rohan Peddi, and Liana Enayati all scored in the first half to have the game tied up at halftime. Too many fouls got the Meters in trouble in the second half, but Elliot Israels was solid for his team with his rebounding. The Bar-Kays were able to get a basket each from Ray Song and Beau Zaczepinski, perfect free throw shooting from Oliver Lynn, 5 fourth quarter points from James Boesiger, and 6 more points from Player of the Game Rohan Peddi to pull away to victory.

Gap vs Contours

The Contours were a little on the short side of players, but gave it a good go. The Contours were able to get double digit scoring from Max Baracy and Hunter Esposito-Doi who made a half court buzzer beater to end the second quarter. The Gap got first half points from Darien Jones, Amensisa Alemayehu, Olana Alemayehu, and Ryan Negasse who had a nice swish of a trey from downtown. The second half saw the Contours continue to play strong and narrow the gap on the Gap’s lead, with strong rebounding from Logan Cappiccille, a basket from Radin Taherian, and several strong drives to the hoop for power layups by Grayson Klein. The Gap would extend their lead in the fourth quarter with a basket each from Yisaac Tariku and Estevan Padron who had 25 rebounds and multiple assists to earn Player of the Game to guide his team to the win.

Wonders vs Impressions

The Impressions were impressive early on as they jumped out to a big lead on two baskets by Ethan Schwartz, free throws and a bucket by Asher Zaczepinski, an outside swisher by Louis Meehan-Smith, and treys and deuces by Player of the Game Jack Phelan. But the Wonders would get stronger as the game went on, and Sasha Peterson would make ‘2”s, Vihaan Nawathe had “3”s, and River Zelenovic would make outside shots to get their team closer. And the Wonders got to within 3 points at the end of third quarter as Mia Kondratyeva and Josh Weil scored and got rebounds. The Impressions showed their well roundedness by getting other players in the scoring as AJ Evans and TJ Turner had drives to the hoop for scores, and Rowan Booher made high arcing rainbow “3”s to light up the gym to have the Impressions go onto victory.

Copper
Stones vs Express

The Express had first quarter baskets from Luke Sarley and Shay Belldegrun who then scored another bucket in the second quarter. The Stones Zayden Rashid converted a free throw in the second quarter and then again in the third quarter, and a bucket in the fourth quarter. The Stones Sora Nomoto had multiple steals and rebounds along with teammate Owen Wang to keep their team close. The Express had additional buckets in the second half from Shay Belldegrun whose brother Kai Belldegrun was the leading assists man who also helped his teammate Beck Britto score 6 points in the fourth quarter. The Express had good defensive performances from Issa Ally and Matthew

Alemayehu. The Stones kept up defensive pressure with Aidan Seet and Alex Wang guarding the perimeter. But the Express were too strong with Benson Berry grabbing rebounds and Player of the Game Theofilos Manolelis being the difference maker by not only scoring for his team but also for the Stones in the first half as he was gracious enough to play on both teams.

Bronze
Chi-Lites vs Drifters

My question to you: Is your sister cute? I will explain later. The Chi-Lites took an early lead on 3 buckets by Player of the Game Jonas Ketai, and a basket by Alex Blondheim. The Drifters got first quarter scoring from Player of the Game Leo Belldegrun and a deep two-pointer from Teo Escanlante to stay close at halftime. The second half saw the Drifters take the lead in the third quarter as Teo Escalante, Leo Belldegrun, and Killian Georgaris each had a basket. The fourth quarter was a tight contest, as the Chi-Lites stepped up on defense with Qiao Ren and Theo Jacobs grabbing rebounds, and a bucket each from Alex Blondheim and Jonas Ketai. The Drifters had a tough defense from Cetine Travnikoff and William Holt, and a ket bucket by Saum Safavi. In the end, the final score was a tie, and as they say “A tie is like kissing your sister”, so is your sister cute?

Platinum

Lakeside vs Gap

Close match throughout, as the Gap had Darien Jones score 11 of his game high 21 points in the first half, and teammates Amensisa Alemayehu, Aayan Lakhani, and Ryan Nagase. The first half had Lakeside scoring from Dagmawi Ayele with 10 points and multiple rebounds, and a basket from Amir Enayati, along with free throws made by Kai Halbert. In the second half, Lakeside got the lead at the end of the third quarter as Ryan Chambers, Gabriel Chibane, and Dylan Kravitz got into the scoring column. With only a few minutes left in the game, all looked bleak for the Gap, but they didn’t give up, and put on the press with Yisaac Tariku, Antonio Rodriquez, and Player of the Game Alex Providas creating turnovers and getting steals to help give the ball to hot shooting Darien Jones who made key baskets and free throws to give the Gap a narrow one point victory! Next time Lakeside is on the London metro, they need to heed the warning: “Mind the Gap”

Supremes vs Godfathers

The Godfathers “Got on the good foot” as Mariama Belew, Maryck Booher, and Abdullah Jooma had early baskets to give their team the lead. The Supremes Rayan Chibane had a strong first half with 6 points, and Ibrahim Ally had a nice put back. The Godfathers kept the pressure on in the third quarter as Maryck Booher continued to score, and Azumi Nomoto and Diego Gonzalez had a basket each. The Godfathers Sean Dobbs was the leading blocker for the game. The Supremes started the to have a “3” party in the third, as Rayan Chibane, Jason Gaines, and Player of the Game Kay Roberts each made a trey, and all off assists by Dominic Drew who then continued to dish out the dimes as he got Eugene Edouarzin into the scoring column, and assisted Michelle Guinzburg on her first basket ever! The fourth quarter was all Supemes as Chloe Scofield grabbed rebounds to help her team go onto victory.

Spinners vs Cameo

You could have cut the tension with a knife as these two teams went back and forth all game with multiple lead changes. The end of the first quarter saw Cameo take a narrow lead on three baskets by Liam Katz, and two baskets from Ming Zhu. First quarter scoring from the Spinners came from Logan Capiccille, Austin Bernier, and Sammy Weil. Cameo held onto a one point lead at halftime due to tough defense by Max Oganes and Kamden King, a basket by Oliver Harris, and a trey and a deuce by Coen Haynes. The Spinners kept pace with steals by Henry Kendall and Siddhant Khanna, and points from Austin Bernier and Logan Cappiccille. Cameo kept that one point lead to end the third frame, as Rohham Taherian made two baskets with a conversion of an “And 1”, and teammates Conrad DiMauro and Ming Zhu made baskets and free throws; however, the Spinners were tough as Redeat Gebeyehu had a bucket, and then turned it on in the fourth quarter with Logan Cappiccille driving to the hoop to score and convert free throws, and Player of the Game Austin Bernier showed his shooting touch with his nice overhead release shots with nothing but net. Cameo had a big fourth quarter from Coen Haynes as he nailed two three pointers in the final minutes, and along with a basket by Liam Katz, their team had a narrow lead, but Sam Affleck and Sammy Weil would be key down the stretch as they each had key baskets on outside jumpers to give their team a narrow victory in a great nail-biter game.

Miracles vs Meters

First quarter belonged to the Meters as Royal Luna had three baskets and converted the free throw on an “And1”, and teammates Logan Christenson and Ocean Yaghoubzadeh made baskets. The Miracles kept pace in the first half with scoring from Lucas Alemayehu, Auden Travnikoff, and Olivia Ruiz who was a perfect two for two from the charity stripe. The second half saw the Miracles close the gap by getting rebounds from Liesha Aggarwal, Mai Ly Pariser, and Saryah Reece who put the rebounds back for points. The Meters were able to hold on for dear life as the defense locked it down in the end, as Player of the Game Ocean Yaghoubzadeh made crucial steals to preserve the Miracles victory.

Drifters vs Chi-Lites

The Drifters got the early lead as they had baskets from Saum Safavi, Killian Georgaris, and Pablo Gonzalez. The Chi-Lites kept pace with first half buckets from Mateo Chan and Qiao Ren, and free throws from Jonas Ketai. The Drifters expanded their lead in the third quarter as William Holt and Cetine Travnikoff created turnovers that led to points for their team. But the Chi-Lites turned it on in the second half Alex Blondheim made two free throws, Jonas Ketai made a couple of driving layups, and Player of the Game Mateo Chan hit a crucial basket in the final minute to give his team the come from behind victory.

Coasters vs Parliaments

Baskets came at a premium, but defense reigned supreme, as both side played tough. The only first half scoring came from a basket each by the Coasters Decker Amos and Aiden McCabe, and the Parliaments Faizan Khan. In the second half, the Parliaments had Oliver and Oscar Farrar guarding the perimeter, Mai Ly Pariser stealing the ball, Jakob Sroka and Olivia Wu getting rebounds; the Coasters had Rome Ricks and Nicholas Rivas crashing the boards, Bodhi Kothari and Sidney Dubois guarding the perimeter, Tyler Enayati disrupting the dribblers, and Sean Murphy adding a crucial basket to give the Coasters the narrow victory.

Bar-Kays vs Miracles

DocDrew’s Swish Issue 2, Volume 12

The Bar-Kays won the battle of the first half with 8 points from Rohan Peddi, and baskets from James Boesiger and Oliver Lynn. First half scoring from the Miracles came from Lucas Alemayehu and Olivia Ruiz. In the second half, the Miracles tightened up the defense as Mai Ly Pariser and Alice Roberts prevented their opponent from getting inside to the basket, and Saryah Reece, Declan Wong, and Liam Desante each had a basket, Mariella Belew was a perfect two for two from the free throw line, and Olivia Ruiz had 6 points in the fourth quarter. The Bar-Kays responded with a fourth quarter surge that included tough defense by Ray Song, Baleau Zaczepinski, and crucial rebounds and steals by Player of the Game Nicholas Chan, as Harrison Bond, Liana Enayati, and Buck Jacobs each had baskets to help the Bar-Kay’s hold into victory.

Players vs Express

This game had a lot of implications in regards to who would win the Copper championship. The Players took a halftime lead on baskets by Oliver Williams, River Stanton, and Jaxon Oxendine. First half scoring for the Express came from Kai Belldegrun and Theofilos Manolelis as they each had a basket. Defense was key in the second half because turnovers created, led to points by both teams. The Players had Esma Chan steal the ball and make assists to Hugo Casarella and Oliver Williams to give her team a good lead in the second half. With the Players having a sizable lead in the fourth quarter, which seemed insurmountable, the Express found a way to come back late in the game. Kai and Shay Belldegrun each had a basket, Beck Britto

converted both his free throws and made a bucket, Theofilos Manolelis made a field goal, Luke Sarley stole the ball, Benson Berry got rebounds, and then with only seconds left, Player of the Game Louis Liu who blocked multiple shots and got many rebounds, was able to put back the biggest bucket of his young career off of an offensive rebound, to give his team the go ahead points to go onto victory. Great game by both sides, and fun to watch.

Godfathers vs Supremes

The Godfathers jumped out to the early lead as Maryck Booher drove to the hoop to have 6 of his game high 11 points in the first quarter, and along with a basket by Jared Garibay, they were looking strong as teammates and brothers Ross and Spencer Nelson tightened up the defense. The Supremes got their scoring going as Jason Gaines, Chloe Scofield, Kay Roberts, Rayan Chibane, and Eugene Edouarzin each made a basket. In the second half, the Godfathers Azumi Nomoto made two baskets in the third quarter, Sean Dobbs blocked several

shots, and Mariama Belew was the master thief to keep their team close. The Supremes responded with a block party from Michelle Guinzberg and Ibrahim Ally as the twin towers rejected all uninvited guests, and no party is complete with the master of assists, Dominic Drew, who made Magic Johnson no look and behind the back passes to once again become the assist leader for the game, this leading the Supremes to victory.

#4 Lakeside vs #5 Wonders

This was a special game to determine who will be the fourth seed in Platinum tourney. Things started off slow for both sides, but the defense was strong. The Wonders Ethan Kondratyev made his return from injury by blocking several shots. First half scoring from Lakeside came with baskets from Ryan Chambers, Gabriel Chiban, and Dagmawi Ayele, and free throws from Noah Michael’s and Kai Halpert to build a big lead; however, the Wonders got multiple players involved in the scoring in the second quarter, which helped to narrow the lead of their opponent; this include Azariah Gebeyehu, MIa Kondratyeva, Sasha Peterson, and Josh Weil making buckets. With the start of the third quarter, Lakeside had baskets by Kai Halpert, Ryan Chambers, and Dagmawi Ayele; however, the Wonders countered with baskets from Sasha Peterson, Josh Weil, MIa Kondratyeva, and Mesalay Benyam. Lakeside would prove too strong as they took over the fourth quarter as Player of the Game Noah Michael continued to score and grab rebounds to help his team go onto victory and capture the #4 seed in the upcoming tournament.

Bronze
Parliaments vs Coasters

Grudge match in the first quarter as the defense was tight, but the Coasters got a basket from Rome Ricks, and the Parliaments had a basket each from Mai Ly Pariser and Beau Bigler. In the second quarter, saw the Coasters Bodhi Kothari make a free throw to get into the scoring column, while the Parliaments #33 Faizan Khan started

playing as if he was the legendary Kareem Abdul Jabbar, grabbing rebounds, making multiple put back baskets, and assisting teammates. The Parliaments took the halftime lead with Billy Casarella and Jakob Sroka tightening up the defense. In the second half, The Coasters got rebounds from Sidney Dubois, Sean Murphy, and Aiden McCabe; however, the Parliaments put the “Flashlight” on, and Olivia Wu made a basket, and Player of the Game, Faizan Khan, continued to shine on as he had a double-double of rebounds and points to guide his team to victory.

Stones vs Players

Unfortunately a double forfeit, so those that came scrimmaged each other. Highlights included the Players Jaxon Oxendine and Hugo Casarella playing well. The Stones had Owen Wang and Zayden Diojol getting in their licks, as Quentin Dijols was awarded Player of the Game for his outstanding performance.

Meters vs Miracles

The Miracles were looking for that Miracle of getting their first win in their last game of the season. Would today be the day? The Miracles were ready as they shut out their opponent in the first quarter with a basket each from Auden Travnikoff, Faizan Khan, Alice Roberts, and Liam Desante, followed by a made free throw from Lucas Alemayehu. First half points for the Meters came from Leo Yaghoubzadeh and Andrey Sterlyagov. The third quarter was even more impressive for the Miracles as five different players had a basket each, including Mai Ly Pariser and Oliva Ruiz. The Meters were stronger in the fourth quarter as they used the full court press to their advantage with baskets from Ocean Yaghoubzadeh, Alexander Melamed, and Charlie Hackett; however, strong defense by Mariella Belew, and continued scoring from Player of the Game, Auden Travnikoff, led the Miracles to their first victory of the season.

Platinum tourney semi-finals #1 Contours vs #4 Lakeside

In the first of the two tourney semi-finals, the Contours jumped out to an early first quarter lead on baskets by Parker Cappiccille, Nicholas Huether, and Radin Taherian. Lakeside started making a comeback in the second quarter, as Dagmawi was the only scorer for his side in the first half, but they continued to play tough in the third quarter as Ryan Chambers, Brandon Israels, and Noah Michael made points. The Contours got Matthew Scholze and Jake Montanez into the scoring column in the third quarter. Lakeside was able to take a small lead in the fourth frame with the help of rebounds from Gabriel Chibane, Kai Halpert, and Luca Hayutin: however, the Contours Nicholas Huether and Player of the Game Jake Montanez were strong down the stretch to regain the lead and bring their team in the 1st place game next weekend.

#2 Gap vs #3 Impression

The Gap had first quarter scoring from Amensisa Alemayehu, Darien Jones, Aayan Lakhani, and Estevan Padron; the Impressions had first quarter scoring from TJ Turner, Ethan Schwartz, and Louis Meehan-Smith, and continued in the second with Rowan Booher making a basket. In the second half, the Impressions continued to get scoring from TJ Turner and Ethan Schwartz, and Jack Phelan had a big fourth quarter with 9 points, and Asher Zaczepinski was strong on defense. The Gap continued to get scoring from Darien Jones as he had a game high 25 points that included five 3-pointers, a free throw made from Ryan Nagase, a basket by Antonio Rodriguez, and a trey from downtown by Olana Alemayehu. The difference maker for the Gap, was Player of the Game Estevan Padron as he led his team in rebounds to help guide the Gap to grab the game.

Copper
Express vs Stones

The kids had fun with their last regular season game. The Stones had standout performances from Zayden Rashid who had 2 baskets, Owen Wang with over 10 rebounds, and steals from Grayson Hahn, Josephine Carey, and Alex Wang. The Express eventually won the match on the strength of baskets from Shay Belldegrun who was assisted by his brother Kai Belldegrun, baskets from Theofilos Manolelis and Luke Sarley, and steals from Matthew Alemayehu and Player of the Game Jason Ren.

#3 Drifters vs #4 Parliaments

The Drifters leading scorer was Teo Escalante with 6 points, and Saum Safavi had a basket, and Killian Georgaris led his team in rebounds. The Parliaments were too strong as Faizan Khan had another impressive game leading his team in scoring, Beau Bigler had a bucket, Mai Ly Pariser made a free throw, and Olivia Wu earned Player of the Game with points and rebounds to lead her team to victory.

Bar-Kays vs Meters

Would the Bar-Kays have the perfect season? All looked that way in the first half as Rohan Peddi, Buck Jacobs, and Beau Zaczepinski had scores, but the Meters fought back(just an expression, after all, no fighting in youth basketball) as Alexander Melamed, Ocean Yaghoubzadeh, and Royal Luna scored to bring their team closer.

The Bar-Kays did a “Hit and Run” as Oliver Hector played tough defense, and Oliver Lynn, Harrison Bond, and Player of the Game Buck Jacob made key baskets to run away with the division title and a perfect undefeated season.

Gold
Supremes vs Cameo

This match was highly competitive throughout. Cameo jumped out to an early lead on baskets by Max Oganes, Rohham Taherian, and Coen Haynes. The Supremes came back as Eugene Edouarzin made a basket, and Rayan Chibane not only made a 3-pointer, but was fouled in the act of shooting, and converted the “And 1” for the rare 4-point play, and the Jason Gaines made a buzzer beater floater to give their team a one point lead at the end of the quarter. The second quarter saw Cameo get that lead back as Ming Zhu, Oliver Harris, Liam Katz, and Rohham Taherian each had a basket. cameo came back to take a one point lead at halftime as Chloe Scofield and Ibrahim Ally made baskets. The third quarter saw Cameo get points from Kamden King and Coen Haynes to get the lead again. The Supremes countered by having Kay Roberts, Chloe Scofield, Jason Gaines, and Player of the Game Rayan Chibane each make two baskets. However, Cameo would come back on a strong fourth quarter from Ming Zhu who drove to the hoop to score multiple points. But towards the end of the game, Dominic Drew became the last Supreme player who had yet to score, deciding to do his banking on Sunday, as he nailed a bank shot “3” to give a comfortable lead for the Supremes to go on to victory.

Godfathers vs Spinners

In honor of the World Cup of Rugby, both teams decided to have Scrums, Mauls, and Lineouts through the first quarter as no Tries were obtained, thus a 0-0 end of the first. Fortunately nobody went to the “Sin Bin”. So I digress, and basketball restarted in the second quarter, as the Godfathers got on the good foot, and Abdullah Jooma and Ross Nelson each had a field goal(yes, that is a basketball term), and the Godfathers had a basket each from Sam Affleck and Austin Bernier. In the second half, the Godfathers got a brand new bag, as Jarec Garibay and Mariama Belew made baskets. The Spinners had the “Rubberband Man” Logan Cappiccille crash the boards and put back shots in for points, Jack Meyer had 6 points in the fourth quarter, and Player of the Game Henry Kendall consistently stole the ball, as their team went onto the victory.

Copper All-Star game Gold vs Chan Family

Not a big turnout, so it was Esme and Nicholas Chan vs Gold team of Issa Ally, Sofia Pulusani, and Quentin Dijols. Later on Zayden Rashid joined the Chan family as everyone in the match scored with Sofia Pulusani as the leading scorer for the Gold, and Esme Chan as the leading scorer for the Purple side as she earned Player of the Game. Issa Ally was Player of the Game for the Gold, as he was all smiles after scoring his first two baskets with the help of referees Dylan and Bill Kravitz.

Bronze All-Stars vs Copper All-Stars

Close first half as the Bronze All-Stars had points from Oscar Farrar, Rex Bullette, and William Holt. The Copper All-Stars had first half scoring From Kai Belldegrun from an assist by his brother Kai, two made free throws from River Stanton, a free throw from Lior Vaisburd, and a bucket by Oliver Williams. In the second half, the Copper All-Stars

did their best on defense with Theo Manolelis, Zayden Rashid, Owen Wang, and Beck Britto gathering rebounds and making steals. The Bronze All-Stars were strong in the second half as Oliver Farrar, Nicholas Rivas, and Rocco Tomas were tightening up the defense. The Bronze All-Stars got additional scoring from Rayden Toteja and Player of the Game, Beau Bigler, to go onto the victory.

Silver All-Stars vs Bronze All-Stars

The Bronze All-Stars were led in scoring by Jonas Ketai who had 10 points, and got 4 points each from Rome Ricks and Sean Murphy. Other notable performances came fro Olivia Wu and Nicholas Chan as they helped on defense. The Silver All-Stars were too strong as Leo Yaghoubzadeh, Alice Roberts, and Leisha Aggarwal played solid defense, and scoring came from Buck Jacobs, Faizan Khan, and a 20 point performance from Player of the Game Saryah Reece.

Gold All-Stars vs Silver All-Stars

The Silver All-Stars did their best to play against the Gold All-stars. The Silver All-Stars were playing their first game on the long court, which is a little bit of a shock for them, but they did a pretty good job against an older and bigger team. The Silver All-Stars had points from Oliver Lynn, Beau Zaczepinski, Royal Luna, Elliot Israels, James Boesiger, and Player of the Game Olivia Ruiz. The Gold All-Stars were victorious behind points from Oliver Harris, Eugene Edouarzin, Liam Katz, Jared Garibay, and Sam Affleck.

The Wonders weren’t able to make the platinum tourney but they did have the consolation of playing a talented gold All-Star team in what turned out to be a competitive first half but eventually the Wonders with the greater size and ability were able to come out with the victory. The Gold all stars had scoring from Ming Zhu, Alden, Wong, and Coen Haynes, along with good defensive performances from Abdullah Jooma, Kayhler Tomlinson, And Rohham Taherian. The Wonders leading scorer and Player of the Game was Josh Weil. Scoring from the Wonders came from Mesalay Benyam, Joshua Edwards, Azariah Gebeyehu, and River Zelenovic. Amanda Camacho put in a great performance for the Wonders in her final game in the program.

Girls 8-12 featuring Santa Monica, Westchester, and Culver/Palms YMCA Junior Lakers vs Junior Clippers

Lamondo Greer brought talented Junior Clippers girls from the Westchester YMCA and the Culver/Palms YMCA to play against our Junior Lakers girls coached by Kelly Roberts. This game went back and forth from start to finish. Saryah Reece was gracious enough to play for the Junior Clippers as they needed more players, and she was a huge difference maker, as she was their leading scorer and rebounder. Although Grace Young was the Player of the Game for the Clippers, Saryah earned Player of the Week for her outstanding performance in this game, and in her All-Star game the day before. The Junior Lakers had scoring from Kay Roberts, Olivia Ruiz, Alice Roberts, Chloe Scofield, and Mariama Belew, but no bigger bucket came in the game then Player of the Game Ray Song making the tying shot in the final seconds to have the game end in a tie.

#1 Coasters vs #2 Chi-Lites

The scenario for this game was the Chi-Lites needed a victory to obtain the championship for the division, and the Coasters only needed a tie. It was looking good for the Chi-Lites in the first half as Jonas Ketai, Alex Blondheim, and Rocco Tomas gave their team a halftime lead, and extended it in the third quarter with made free throws by Rex Bulette; but, the Coasters stepped it up as Sean Murphy, Bodhi Kothari, Rome Ricks, and Bronze division MVP Decker Amos started scoring to catch up, and have the game end in a tie. So the Coasters had to “Kiss their sister”, but also kiss the championship cup.

#3 Cameo vs #4 Spinners

Neck and neck throughout as these two teams put on fine displays of youth basketball. First half scoring from Cameo came from Coen Haynes, Liam Katz, Max Oganes, and

Rohham Taherian who went on to be the leading scorer for the game. The Spinners had first half scoring from Austin Bernier, Logan Cappiccille, Henry Kendall, and Sammy Weil. The second half became more of a defensive battle, as the Spinners Jack Mayer stole the ball, and his teammate Sam Affleck scored a couple of baskets. Cameo ended up pulling it out, as Ryan Yousefi got rebounds, and fed the ball to Rohham Taherian who scored most of his points in the second half to give his team the victory.

Platinum tourney 3rd place game Lakeside vs Impressions

The Impressions came roaring out of the gate, as the “3” musketeers Rowan Booher, AJ Evans, and Rowan Booher had a “3” party by shooting lights out from downtown, along with putback rebounds for scores from Ethan Schwartz. Lakeside kept pace as Gabriel Chibane, Aiden Lin, and Brandon Israels made baskets. In the third quarter, the Impressions extended their lead as the “3” musketeers continued their “3” party, and Asher Zaczepinski added a basket, along with tough defense from Louis Meehan-Smith. The beginning of the fourth quarter saw Lakeside having to try to overcome a big deficit, but they started to make it happen as Ryan Chambers, Kai Halpert, and Gabriel Chibane made shots, and Dylan Kravitz started to make long distance shots off of assists from Luca Hayutin and Amir Enayati. Lakeside got close in the final minutes, but the Impressions were able to hold on to prevent the comeback, and claim the victory.

#1 Supremes vs #2 Godfathers

Since losing the first game of the season, the Supremes have gone on a winning streak, and today it would continue. The Supremes jumped to the early lead on baskets from Jason Gaines, Eugene Edouarzin, Kay Roberts, Chloe Scofield, and Ibrahim Ally. The Godfathers did keep pace with multiple baskets from Mariama Belew, and points from Azumi Nomoto, Diego Gonzalez, Kayhler Tomlinson, and Maryck Booher. Sean Dobbs was the rebound leader for the Godfathers. The Supremes Dominic Drew was the assist leader for the game with 5 dimes, and his teammate Rayan Chibane was the master thief leading the game in steals.

Platinum tourney 1st place game Gap vs Contours

The match to determine it all for the championship of the top division at the Santa Monica Family YMCA turned out to be a fantastic game that featured the best of youth basketball at our Y. The Gap won the first quarter on the strength of the “3” ball as Darien Jones and brothers Amensisa and Olana Alemayehu each sank a trey, and Cassius Taylor had two baskets, and for good measure, Darien Jones got a three the old fashioned way by getting fouled when making the basket and converted the “And1” free throw, and teammate Ryan Nagase nailed a three from the deep left corner. The Contours fought back as Max Baracy, Hunter Esposito-Doi, Nicholas Huether, Grayson Klein, and Jake Montanez all made baskets in the first half to narrow….the gap, lol. Defense took over in the third quarter, but so did the Contours Parker Cappiccille as he continued to convert free throws, but then started nailing shots from the elbow and made a 3-pointer. In the fourth quarter, the Gap had Darien Jones get hot with key baskets and Antonio Rodrigeuz made a free throw, but the Contours grabbed the lead as Parker Cappiccille played the big man with 4 buckets in the final minutes to grab a narrow lead, that the Gap could not get the final shot off due to the tough defense of the Contours. In the end, the Contours claimed the Platinum championship.

Each issue, Swish has a profile of a coach, player, or someone in the program who inspires all of us involved in Santa Monica YMCA youth basketball.

This issue’s profile is of Christy Stewart who is a fellow staff member at the Santa Monica Family YMCA.

Christy wears many hats at our YMCA, and many members, players, and parents have been given friendly greetings from her, when they check in at the front desk. Christy has been a longtime supporter of our youth basketball program, and has given much support in helping it to run smoothly.

Christy always greets everyone with an infectious smile and “How ya doing?” to make sure to always let them know that she cares and is ready to help.

There are times when we are all exhausted or having a bad day, and Christy is the one who can give us encouragement and lift us up and keep us going. She knows how to inspire us.

I asked Christy a few questions for the Swish:

DocDrew: What is your favorite thing about working at the Santa Monica YMCA?

Christy: I love helping and meeting new and interesting people. It brightens my day to talk to new people.

Christy: All the strong and courageous women in my life.

DocDrew: What hobbies or activities do you like to do?

Christy: I like to read, listen to music, watch movies, play games with my kids, volleyball, swimming, hiking, and camping.
