Tonight!: Streetsblog Hosts Panel Discussion “Complete High Speed Rail in Five Years?”

Date:

Tune in to tonight at 6 p.m. for Streetsblog’s online roundtable on the technical, financial & political changes needed to get @CaHSRA service from SF to LA in five years. Sign up on Eventbrite for details.

The California High-Speed Rail project will fundamentally transform how people move around the state, spur economic growth, and create a cleaner environment–and construction continues every day on the project with service slated to start in the Central Valley in 2030.

But wait, why 2030?

That means it’ll be another seven years just to finish a project that’s already substantially completed, and then just from Merced to Bakersfield. Meanwhile, China is building thousands of miles of HSR in less time. Moreover, the U.S., long ago, built the transcontinental railroad in only six years!

Advocate Carter Lavin reached out to Streetsblog about hosting a panel to discuss how HSR can get built in a more reasonable time frame, and not just from Merced to Bakersfield, but all the way from San Francisco to Los Angeles. How much would that cost? What political stars would have to align? Come find out.
