The primary election is over and the results are in. Republican Elan Carr finished with 21.5 percent of the vote in the race to replace Henry Waxman as Congressional District 33’s representative. In November, he’ll face State Senator Ted Lieu (D-Torrance), who finished with 19 percent of the vote, in the November election.
The race to replace County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky will feature a head-to-head race between former State lawmaker Sheila Kuehl, who pulled in about 36 percent of the vote last night, and former Santa Monica Mayor and member of the Kennedy clan, Bobby Shriver, who finished with 29 percent.
In the State Senate race, Santa Monica-Malibu School Boardmember Ben Allen came out on top with about 22 percent of the vote, followed by activist and attorney Sandra Fluke, who got just shy of 20 percent.
And, while it’s still too early to definitively say who will be our new County Sheriff, Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell got 49 percent of the vote, well ahead of his nearest contender, former Undersheriff Paul Tanaka, who finished with 14.74 percent of the vote.

Now that the primary elections are over, here are some upcoming events in the community that aren’t election related.
Memorial Service
It’s hard to believe it has been a year since the tragic shooting at Santa Monica Community College committed by John Samir Zawahiri claimed the life of five people. To mark the anniversary, an interfaith service will be held this Saturday at 9:15 a.m. the Santa Monica Catholic Community’s Church at 725 California Avenue this Saturday. Following the service, there will be a rally for an end to gun violence in America. The interfaith service will be preceded by Catholic Mass at 8 a.m.
Film Festival
Later that afternoon, and through until Sunday, the 9th Annual Santa Monica Teen Film Festival will be held with a record three different screenings on Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. You can get more details at the City’s website, or the Film Festival’s Facebook Page.
Picnic
Before the weekend, Friday at lunch time is one of this summer’s “Picnic on the Promenade” events to celebrate the Promenade’s 25th Anniversary. Arizona and Third will make the spot where a pop-up picnic area will great lunch-goers every Friday from noon until 3.
Planning Commission
Tonight at 7 p.m., the City Planning Commission meets in the City Council Chambers in City Hall. The main item on the agenda is a continued discussion of the city’s planning code. You can read the full agenda, here.
