Roosevelt Elementary marked a major construction milestone Feb. 23 with a topping off ceremony to celebrate the placement of the final beam atop its new library and Transitional Kindergarten building.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education members, school staff, construction partners, families and community members joined students for the event, which recognized the completion of a building’s structural framework.

As part of the long-standing construction tradition, the final beam was signed by students, board members, teachers, administrators and construction project team members before being lifted into place. Many students added their names and messages of encouragement, symbolizing their role in shaping the future of the school.

The project, made possible through voter-approved Measure QS in November 2024, will provide a modern library designed as a central hub for reading, research and collaboration, along with three Transitional Kindergarten classrooms and four Kindergarten classrooms.

Transitional Kindergarten is a new program the district is implementing for 4-year-old students, separate from Kindergarten and funded without additional state support, underscoring the district’s commitment to expanding early learning opportunities. The project also includes a new entry sequence and garden to create a welcoming and secure campus environment.

“This building represents more than new space. It represents our commitment to giving children a strong and joyful start,” said Dr. Amy Onyendu, principal of Roosevelt Elementary School. “We look forward to the many memories that will be made inside these walls.”
