The following is a submission from the City of Santa Monica

The city of Santa Monica is inviting residents to apply for the new One SaMo People’s Academy, a six-week course offering an inside look at city operations, priorities and civic engagement opportunities.

The program aims to build understanding, transparency and trust between Santa Monica residents and their local government. Participants will gain insight into how policies are developed, budgets are allocated and services are delivered — empowering them to become active partners in shaping the city’s future by creating a deeper bench of informed community leaders.

Presentation topics will include:

  • Government 101
  • Public safety
  • City infrastructure and sustainability
  • Transportation and land use
  • Housing and Human Services and community programs

A separate, one-day Youth Civic Leadership Day will be offered at a later date, with more details to come.

The One SaMo People’s Academy is open to Santa Monica residents, college students, business owners or community leaders who are 18 years or older. The first cohort will include 25 participants. Applications are due by Monday, March 16, 2026.
