OPA Update 8/1/24: Santa Monica Rents Continue Sliding, Main St. Closed Sunday AM for Festival of Chariots, & Other Things To Do This Weekend

OPA August 12 Monthly Meeting: That meeting features Santa Monica Fire Department Chiefs and more! Hope to see you at the Main St. library for the 6:30pm meeting. Light dinner will be served starting @ 6pm with pizzas generously donated by Triple Beam Pizza on Main St.  

NEXT WEEK: National Night Out (Tuesday, August 6, 5:30 – 8:30p.m. @ City Hall, 1685 Main St.): The annual community-building event promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. Expect FREE music, food, and activities for all ages. SMPD will showcase their various police vehicles and equipment and invite the community to meet police personnel (human and 4-legged alike).The parking structure at Olympic & 4th St. is free that night and Big Blue Bus will be providing free bus rides all night when you mention National Night Out. More details here.

Council Places Parking Tax on Ballot: “In an effort to boost public safety initiatives, Santa Monica voters will be asked to approve a parking tax hike measure on the November ballot for motorists using private parking facilities. Approved by the Council with a unanimous vote on Tuesday, the Parking Facility Tax measure would raise the existing tax by 8%, generating approximately $6.7 million a year.” More details here.

Santa Monica Rents Continue Sliding: “Santa Monica rents dipped again in July, marking the sixth monthly drop this year amid modest rent growth nationwide, according to the monthly rent report by Apartment List. Prices in Santa Monica are now down 4.9 percent year-over-year with the median monthly rent price currently standing at $2,437 after dropping $25 this month, according to data based on the site’s listings.” More details here.

Pasjoli Summer of Sous Series: Throughout August, the Michelin-starred Main St. staple is showcasing their “talented team of sous chefs who are in the kitchen with Chef Dave each night” by letting them “take over the Pasjoli kitchen for one night to showcase their own personal cooking style & influences.” Each four-course menu is priced at $95 per person. Thursday, Aug. 1, features Chef Jose presenting “a menu full of Mexican flavors and, of course, tequila.” https://www.pasjoli.com/summer-of-sous 

Things To Do This Weekend: 

  • Abbot Kinney First Friday Food Truck Fest (Friday starting at 5:00pm): About two dozen food trucks are expected to line the street for the monthly event. https://www.abbotkinneyblvd.com/
  • Endless Summer C.A.M.P. (Community | Art | Music | Picnic) at Tongva Park (FREE Saturday 11am – 2pm): This first of four Saturday events celebrates community, arts and culture. Bring a picnic and join as artists from across Santa Monica and the LA region share their culture through interactive music, performances, and hands-on crafts. Special performances by local youth will be featured. Open to all. Saturday Aug. 3, features Bollywood dance performance by Joya Kazi Entertainment along with bells and beads adornment workshop with Matti Sands. Angel Fruits Cart will offer fresh fruit for purchase. This recurs all Saturdays in August (3, 10, 17, & 24). More details here.
  • The Festival of Chariots Celebrates Ancient Indian Tradition (Sunday 10am): Dancers in colorful clothing, music, a multicourse feast, 40-foot tall hand-drawn floats — The Festival of Chariots will be an explosion of culture and celebration. More details hereParade begins at 1855 Main St. and the festival takes place at 1530 Ocean Front Walk.
  • Community Corp. Affordable Housing Bus Tour (Saturday 9:30am): Join Community Corp. for a tour of our inclusive, architecturally vibrant and environmentally sustainable affordable housing developments. More details here.
  • Main St. Farmers Market (Sunday 8:30am – 1:30pm): It’s National Farmers Market Week!  Come join us as we celebrate our farmers and our dedicated customers with vocalist and fidler, Chloe Resler 10am-1pm. Ballroom Dancing for kids with Roxane at 11am and noon.
