OPA Update 6/10/24: OPA Monthly Meeting TONIGHT (Monday), Main St. 4th of July Parade Registration Open, & Things To Do This Week

OPA June Monthly Meeting TONIGHT/Monday: This month’s meeting will be at the 2601 Main St. Library starting with food and mingling at 6:00pm. We will also be hybrid on Zoom. Here is the Zoom link to join the meeting starting at 6:30pm. Here’s the draft agenda and here’s schedule:

  • 6:00 – 6:30pm: Food, refreshments and mingling
  • 6:30 – 6:45pm: SMPD update 
  • 6:45 – 7:00pm: Santa Monica Fire Department
  • 7:00 – 7:15pm: Rev Janet and Kera Blades-Snell
  • 7:15 – 8:20: Board business, including upcoming calendar of events (Make Music Day, July 4 Parade, Solstice Festival, & more)

Main St. 4th of July Parade Registration Open: This year’s theme, “Celebrating the Arts,” encourages participants to showcase Santa Monica’s creative soul. Organizers are looking for dazzling floats, marching bands, and creative performances that embody the city’s artistic energy. Applications are now open for community groups, businesses, and individuals to participate in the parade. Whether you choose to march, drive, or create a stunning float, the Santa Monica 4th of July Parade is the perfect platform to celebrate Independence Day with your community. The Latest Updates on Downtown SaMo Economic Recovery & Public Safety Efforts: City Manager David White wrote this post detailing “Clean & Safe” efforts, highliughts on “Economic Growth & Cultural Vitality” and listed out what’s “Coming soon to downtown Santa Monica.”

Artist Launches Apparel Brand Inspired by Santa Monica’s Street Art: This SaMo Mirror report details how “Growing up in foster homes in Compton, TSMOKE found solace and inspiration in art. His life took a positive turn when he was adopted by a single father and relocated to the north side of Santa Monica, as explained in a news release. This blend of rising from difficult circumstances and being in tune with the streets has manifested in TSMOKE APPAREL.” 

Workshop on Swapping Gas Appliances for Electric Options: “Are you interested in making your home safer, healthier, and more comfortable? Join the City of Santa Monica, QuitCarbon, and green-building expert Robert Fortunato for a free 2-hour workshop on Monday, June 17, 4 – 6pm PDT that will cover all things related to building electrification in Santa Monica – including electric appliances (e.g. heat pump water heaters and inductions cooktops), electricity cost impacts, what to ask your contractor, and incentives to help fund these projects. Things To Do This Week: 

  • Tuesday Tales: A Traveling Storytime- Rainbow Family Storytime (Tuesday 10:30am): Celebrate LGTQIA+ Pride Month with an inclusive storytime for LGBQTIA+ and ally families. This engaging & fun weekly series of stories, songs and rhymes travels to different library locations every week. Limited space; free tickets available at 10:15 a.m. For ages 2-5. More details here.
  • Computer Class: Online Image Editing (Wednesday 10:30am): Learn to improve your photos and designs using free online tools. More details here.
  • Housing Programs Office Hours at Virginia Avenue Park (Wednesday 4:30pm): Housing staff will be available for monthly “Office Hours” to assist applicants, in English and Spanish, with questions about the City’s Below Market Housing (BMH) and Preserving Our Diversity (POD) programs. These sessions will take place on select Wednesdays at Virginia Avenue Park (VAP) from May to August. The goal of this effort is to better support community members that wish to connect with staff in-person about these programs but are unable to make it to City Hall during normal business hours.
