Ellen Evans Announces Campaign for State Senate

Date:

Activist Ellen Evans* announced her candidacy to replace Ben Allen as the State Senator for the 24th State Senate District. Allen is term-limited and cannot seek reelection in 2026.

Evans is best known locally as one of the founders of the Doheny Sunset Plaza Neighborhood Association in 2017 in Los Angeles but traces her advocacy routes to protests against the Reagan Administration’s inaction during the early days of the AIDS crisis in the 1980’s. She is also a former board member of Equality California.

“I’m running for State Senate to fight for you, your family, and your neighborhood in the same way that I’ve fought for mine,” writes Evans in her campaign announcement. “I know that together, we can strengthen public safety and emergency preparedness, tackle the housing crisis responsibly, and build an economy that works for working families and small business owners.”

Evans is the second candidate to announce for Allen’s seat joining SMC College Trustee Dr. Sion Roy. The 24th Senate District covers most of the Westside from Los Angeles, Hollywood, South Bay, and Santa Monica, Malibu and portions of unincorporated Los Angeles County.

*Disclaimer: A quick look at my social media will show that Evans and I are old Facebook friends. She attended and promoted a bicycle ride sponsored by Streetsblog Los Angeles in 2008 when I was editor focused on highlighting safety concerns with the Ballona Creek Bike Path. We have not been in regular contact since then.
