Over the weekend, Mayor Phil Brock announced the “Safer Santa Monica” slate of candidates for Santa Monica City Council. Brock will be joined by incumbent City Councilmember Oscar de la Torre and first-time candidates Vivian Roknian and John Putnam. The top four vote getters in the November election will join Councilmembers Lana Negrete, Caroline Torosis and Jesse Zwick.
With Councilmembers Gleam Davis and Christine Parra deciding not to seek re-election; the “Safer Santa Monica” slate will likely see its stiffest competition from another slate of newcomers, the “United Democratic Slate” of Dan Hall, Ellis Raskin, Barry Snell, and Natalya Zernitskaya.
The United Democratic Slate has made most of the headlines in the pre-election cycle having earned endorsements from a host of local and regional political and advocacy groups including Santa Monicans for Renters Rights, the Santa Monica Democratic Club, the Sierra Club and the Westside Young Democrats.
Safer Santa Monica is hosting an opportunity to meet the candidates, well at least half of them, tomorrow night during the City Council meeting. The event will run from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at 1212 Santa Monica on the Promenade.
The two slates are joined by Ericka Lesley and Wade Kelley on the fall ballot. If you’re like many Santa Monicans and just tuning into the election right now, below are links to all of their candidate statements on the city’s website.
