Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier’s Ferris wheel will feature a 90-feet tall, animated waving American flag throughout Memorial Day weekend in special salute to military personnel who died in service. The patriotic light program will also feature brilliant colors and patterns in red, white and blue.

Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday each May in the United States as an opportunity to honor and mourn the military personnel who have died in the performance of their military duties while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

The Pacific Wheel’s 174,000 LED lights are mounted on the Ferris wheel’s structure including the 40 spokes and two hubs. The world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel’s lighting system features 16.7 million color value combinations while the programming and display software presents imaging up to 24 frames per second to display dynamic, custom, computer-generated lighting entertainment. The eco-friendly, enhanced LED lighting provides 81 percent greater energy savings than most Ferris wheel’s traditional incandescent bulbs.

The Ferris wheel soars nine stories high and lifts riders more than 130 feet above the Pacific Ocean to offer extraordinary views of the Southern California coastline.
