Audience Q&A follows September 12 talk with USC Law Professor Jody Armour, September 14 talk with UC Berkeley School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky
SANTA MONICA, CA — Santa Monica College (SMC) will honor Constitution Day this year with two informative talks about the U.S. Constitution. University of Southern California (USC) law professor Jody Armour will give a talk at 6:30 p.m. (PDT) on Tuesday, September 12. UC Berkeley School of Law dean Erwin Chemerinsky will speak at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, September 14. Each talk will be followed by a brief discussion and Q&A moderated by SMC English professor Hari Vishwanadha.
Both talks are free and will be presented online as live virtual events. A Zoom link taking guests directly to each event will be available on the event date at smc.edu/events shortly before the event begins. To attend, Zoom software must be installed on the viewer’s computer (free download available at zoom.com).
The event is sponsored by the Associated Students of Santa Monica College, with support from the SMC Associates (smc.edu/associates), a private organization that funds speakers and special programs on campus.
Constitution Day, also known as Citizenship Day, was established in 2005 to honor the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787, by the 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. All educational institutions that receive federal funds must present a program for students each year in honor of Constitution Day to celebrate the rights and liberties protected by a written Constitution.
Jody Armour is the Roy P. Crocker Professor of Law at the University of Southern California and a Soros Justice Senior Fellow of The Open Society Foundations Center on Crime, Communities & Culture. He serves on the Board of Directors for international nonprofit LEAP (Law Enforcement Action Partnership) advocating for criminal justice reform, and is a widely published scholar whose books include N*gga Theory: Race, Language, Unequal Justice, and the Law.
Erwin Chemerinsky is Dean and Jesse H. Choper Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. He is a former President of the Association of American Law Schools and the author of numerous law review articles and 15 books, including Constitutional Law and Interpreting the Constitution.
