Full Speech Given by Lindsey Horvath at Yesterday’s Rally to Save the Coast

Date:

Note: The Supervisor’s Office mailed us a copy of Horvath’s notes yesterday that can be found below the video.

  • Good afternoon, everyone.
  • Thank you all for showing up today to stand up to the Trump Administration and protect our priceless California coast.

  • I’m Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, and I am proud to represent Los Angeles County’s Third District.

  • My district includes America’s most iconic coastal communities: Santa Monica, Malibu, the Pacific Palisades, and Venice.

  • And on behalf of LA County’s ten million residents…and the 75 million annual visitors to our beaches every year–
  • We are telling the Trump Administration to back off our beach.

  • Reckless proposals to sell out our coastline threaten what we all know is so important:
    • Our thriving coastal economy
    • Our unparalleled biodiversity
    • And the natural beauty that we treasure

  • Los Angeles County rejects any and all efforts to allow oil and gas drilling or deep seabed mining off the California coast
  • Last year, our state averaged 70 oil spills every single month.

  • Disasters like the Santa Barbara Refugio spill have wreaked havoc and harmed our economy.

  • We are writing a different future for our region.
  • Los Angeles County, which is the nation’s largest urban oil field, is banning new oil drilling.

  • And we are protecting our neighborhoods by phasing out existing wells.
  • LA County will soon achieve 100% renewable and reliable electricity.

  • Meanwhile, the Trump Administration is recklessly starting foreign wars and skyrocketing the price at the pump.

  • Rather than helping you, they are wasting billions of taxpayer dollars to bribe energy companies to cancel offshore wind projects.
  • Those are projects that represent real energy independence, fight the climate crisis, and create good paying jobs.

  • If they wanted to really help our communities, they would release billions of disaster aid to help our coastal communities desperate to rebuild their lives after the Palisades Fire.

  • We know what is best for Los Angeles County, for California, and for our nation.

  • And I will never stop fighting to protect it.
