Columnist Peggy Noonan wrote, a few days ago in the Wall Street Journal, that the middle-of-night-blogger-in-chief had “met his match” in taking on Pope Leo. She quoted early TV religio-celebrity, Bishop Fulton Sheen, whose live TV show regularly drew more viewers than the very popular Milton Berle comedy show, as saying “Well, I just had a better sponsor and better writers (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John)”.
The same is certainly true of the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Catholics world-wide. But one could add, “and, by the way, a better message”.
In this Bully meets Bully Pulpit scenario, one party lies and preens, touting his war “victories” and reveling in mass murder and intimidation, while the other reminds the world of the transformational power of peace, mercy and an end to aggression through the winning over of hearts.
In these difficult times, it seems that many are swayed by the siren call of physical power, intimidation and weaponry. Of course, few in Gandhi’s time believed that non-violence would work, either.
But, from the non-violent independence movement of Satyagraha to the American Civil Rights Movement, to only a few days ago in Hungary where the power of protest and use of the vote upended the dictatorship of that country’s corrupt strongman, Victor Orban, we can see the greater power of just saying “no”, while showing up, voting, and choosing the ways re-validated by Pope Leo.
The bully has met his match, alright, and that match has ignited an unquenchable change. The worm is turning, and, powered by all of us, it is turning against the failing worm in the white house. As Commander Peter Quincy Taggart (played by Tim Allen in the iconic film Galaxy Quest) liked to say, “Never give up, never surrender.” Superabimus.
In The Interest of Injustice
So, the white house wrecking ball was fine with renaming the Department of Defense as the Department of War, but apparently doesn’t see that he needs to change the name of the Department of Justice to the Department of Injustice.
One example: Not content with pardoning the January 6th insurrectionists, one by one, the failing white house squatter has ordered his pitiful, leaderless and inaptly named Department of Justice to vacate all seditious conspiracy convictions arising from that attack, and dismiss any remaining charges against the key leaders, including the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys.
In one fell swoop, the rampaging felons who, in order to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the presidential election won by Joe Biden, broke windows, seriously injured capitol police officers, and defecated in and trashed Congressional offices, as well as the Congressional Floor, are now set free to do more harm.
The basis of this illegal tornado is, supposedly, that “it must be done in the interest of justice”.
What a crock. And how typical of this convicted felon who not only breaks all the rules of decency and intellect, but wouldn’t recognize justice if it slapped him in the face.
Which it will, and soon. Just as it has quickly slapped many of the January 6th crowd already pardoned. In multiple state and local prosecutions, brought for crimes committed after their pardon and release, they have been newly charged, tried, or convicted on charges ranging from child sexual abuse to murder, violent threats, kidnapping, home invasion, spousal battery, theft and a host of other crimes.
Now that’s justice.
