Santa Monica Democratic Club Endorses Sion Roy for State Senate

Date:

At last night’s endorsement meeting, the Santa Monica Democratic Club voted to endorse Dr. Sion Roy for State Senate in the race to replace Ben Allen who is term-limited out of office.

Roy, a former president of the Dem. Club himself, was considered the front runner for the endorsement. But with West Hollywood Councilmember John Erickson having received the endorsement of Santa Monica Forward and some local political heavyweights such as Gleam Davis, it was one of two competitive votes at last night’s endorsement meeting. Even so, Roy received 189 votes, 77% of the votes cast, easily besting Erickson who received 44 votes/18%.

The other competitive endorsement was for State Treasurer, where former Santa Monica Mayor Tony Vazquez earned 124 votes/55%, over twice what Lt. Governor Elena Kounalakis, 61 votes/27%. Vazquez just earned the endorsement, per club rules 55% support is required to earn an endorsement.

The Dem. Club also endorsed Shirley Weber for Secretary of State and Rob Bonta for Attorney General, each was running unopposed for the endorsement. Support for Prop. 50 was also completed by voice acclamation without opposition.

Roy is a cardiologist and associate professor at Harbor-UCLA, directing the Inpatient Cardiac CT program and co-leading the cardiology fellowship. He’s also a Santa Monica College trustee, a citywide elected office and former president of the Los Angeles County Medical Association.

The primary election for will be held on June 2 of next year. It is an “open primary” so two Democrats can emerge as final candidates should no candidate receive more than 50% of the vote.
