OPA August Monthly Meeting TONIGHT/Monday: This month’s meeting will be at the 2601 Main St. Library starting with food provided by Triple Beam Pizza and mingling at 6:00pm. We will also be hybrid on Zoom. Here is the Zoom link to join the meeting starting at 6:30pm. Here’s the agenda and here’s schedule:

  • 6:00 – 6:30pm: Food, refreshments and mingling
  • 6:30 – 6:45pm: SMPD update 
  • 6:45 – 7:00pm: Santa Monica Fire Department Chiefs
  • 7:00 – 7:15pm:
  • 7:15 – 8:20: Board business, including upcoming calendar of events (National Night Out Recap, 8/29 Happy Hour planning, Day of the Dog Festival planning, & more)

OPA Summer Happy Hour Aug. 29: Save the date to get together on the patio of the new Edgemar Restaurant & Lounge from 4-7pm. More details Thursday on their grand opening this coming weekend.

U.S. Olympic Volleyball Champ Kerri Walsh Jennings Spikes Home Santa Monica’s Role in the Game: She partnered with Santa Monica Travel and Tourism (SMTT) on this Instagram  post. The tens of millions of viewers who tuned into the Olympics’ final volleyball match in Paris on Friday likely didn’t know that Santa Monica was the birthplace of the game they were watching. “Not only is Santa Monica the birthplace of modern beach volleyball, it was the place to train,” she says reflecting on the early days of her career. “The sand is deep and the competition is amazing.

LA Metro Safety Initiatives Aims to Curb Crime in Santa Monica: “The $65 million worth of initiatives, which will be tested in a suite of pilot programs at different stations in the LA area, will make it much harder for passengers to illegally board trains without paying a fare. They include installing taller fare gates, upgrading security cameras and testing a detection system that uses high-frequency radio waves that can easily detect weapons.” More details here.

Fall Recreation Registration Open: Priority online registration for fall recreation programs opened to Santa Monica residents on August 7, at 6 AM. Non-resident registration will open on August 14th. Online registration is required; walk-up registration is not available. Register here. Fall recreation classes for youth and adults at City parks will begin the week of September 9. 

The Street Seen: 2401 Main St. @ Hollister: “The existing 2401 Main St is built in 1966 as a 2-story commercial woodworking workshop, and converted to office use in 1977.” But the history of the lot dates back to 1893. Read more details here.

Things To Do This Week: 

  • Social Service Assistance (Tuesday 9:30am – 5pm @ Virginia Avenue Park, 2200 Virginia Ave. Park Center Building): Provided by Providence St. John’s Community Health Program Providence St. John’s staff can assist with enrollment in CalFresh, California’s food subsidy program created to improve the nutrition of families through access to healthy foods. Staff can also help navigate enrollment or questions for MediCal and Medicare. If you have questions about whether you qualify for benefits or if you need help completing enrollment forms, you can make an appointment by calling 310.458.8688. Drop-ins are also welcome.
  • Computer Basics – Organize Your Files & Photos (Wednesday 10:30am – 12pm): “Learn how to create and name folders, copy and move files, and more. For beginners.” Main Library 601 Santa Monica Blvd. More details here.
