Bike “to Anywhere” Day Remains a Top Draw in Santa Monica (and There Was a Cool 5K Too).

Date:

Yesterday was Bike to Anywhere Day and I went out to enjoy one of my favorite unofficial holidays. After dropping my kids off at school, I hopped on the bike and headed into Santa Monica to enjoy the “pit stops” at City Hall, SMC, and Colorado Center. Sadly, I scribbled “2500 Broadway” into my notebook instead of “2500 Colorado” and circled the Water Garden looking for a pit stop.

So instead of ending my tip at Colorado Center, I headed back to Cafe Lovi for some drip coffee and a sandwich before heading home.

The first stop was SMC, where students and a professor greeted cyclists with coffee and breakfast treats.
The pit stop in front of City Hall remains one of the biggest Bike Day attractions in the county.
Spoke was a major presence at the City Hall pit stop, with literature on everything from how to change a tire to a flyer celebrating May as mental health awareness month.
The city also had several booths setup with information on future mobility projects, BBB schedules and TAP cards and more.
The city OFFICIALLY declared May Bike Month at their last meeting in April. The official proclamation was on hand.

In the late afternoon, I headed back to the pier for a 5k run to benefit the Police Activities League (formerly the Police Athletic League) named after former Santa Monica Police Officer Rick Crocker. Crocker was killed serving the country as a marine in Iraq in 2005. Crocker had also volunteered with the Santa Monica Police Athletic League and remains at SMPD.

The 5k run featured a handful of unaffiliated runners there to support the organization but most runners were either youth members of the PAL, runners from Santa Monica High and other SMMUSD schools, or members/veterans of local law enforcement or the military.

Hundreds of runners took part in the Rick Crocker 5k. Here a group of PAL members walk past an American Flag display put up by SMFD as part of the event.
SMPD Chief Ramon Batista was one of several dignitaries who welcomed runners to the event.

After I finished my run, it was back to Bike Day. I met my family at Spoke’s Handle Bar Happy Hour at Santa Monica Brew Works.

Ok, so I forgot to take a picture of the fun at Brew Works until I was leaving.

If you missed out on fun yesterday, but still want to take part in Bike Month Festivities, Kidical Mass is this weekend. Get all the details, here.
