The Santa Monica College (SMC) Corsairs Women’s Tennis Team won the Women’s Community College Team Trophy at the 117th Annual Ojai Tennis Tournament held April 27-30. Glendale College and Canada College finished in a tie for second place, with Orange Coast College taking third place.

Mayra Jovic, the 2015 state singles and doubles champion, and her doubles partner, Abby Mullins, won the CCCAA state title for doubles, defeating Glendale College’s doubles team of Tsukimi Ono and Veronika Galstyan in the championship final 6-4, 6-3. To reach the final, Jovic and Mullins defeated a tough Orange Coast doubles team 2-6, 6-1, and 10-6 in a super-tiebreaker. Head Coach Richard Goldenson said, “Abby and Mayra had a tough loss to the Orange Coast team in the SoCal Regional Final just eight days earlier, and they dedicated themselves to making improvements to reverse the outcome of the SoCal Final. I am really proud of their perseverance and commitment to each another and the entire team.”

This was Santa Monica College’s fifth appearance in the Ojai doubles final since 2010. In addition to the 2017 doubles title, SMC won doubles titles in 2010, 2011, and 2015, and was a finalist in 2013. “SMC’s performance in the Ojai and state championships this decade has been very exciting and impressive,” said Coach Goldenson.

This is the fourth time in the history of the tournament that Santa Monica College has won the Ojai team title. SMC also won team titles in 1985, 2011, and 2015.

“SMC pride is strong and alive up in Ojai,” Coach Goldenson said. “Players from this team can come back to Libbey Park for years to come and see Santa Monica on the board of champions, and remember a time when they competed fiercely with grace and poise for themselves, their teammates, and their school.  I could not be more proud of this team.”
